Or I could've titled it 'what are all these smart TVs about?'

I've got a budget of £500 for a 55" TV. It's to go in the lounge as something for occasional watching. I say 'occasional' as we have a 65" OLED in the snug for films etc. We have a Firestick for it and it'll be plugged in to a Panasonic HDR.

When looking round I've found Roku TVs and Firestick TVs as well as the usual smart TVs with a built in app interface.

What's it all about? I was quite happily filtering to LG, Samsung and Panasonic as my limited knowledge suggests those as quality brands.

Do I stick to my pre-conceived ideas about brand quality or is there a left field alternative? (What HiFi seems to think that TCL has a quality product)

I bought a 58 inch qled Hisense last year, superb for around 500 quid, no complaints at all.

Probably at that budget they will all be pretty similar but buy a brand that make there own TVs.

What is the 65" OLED that you have?

Would it not be better to buy from the same manufacturer so hopefully the menus will be similar?

It’s an LG - not to worried about menus, it’s more the desire to have something that’s adequate against the other TV.

I should’ve said no refurbished ones.

+1 for the Philips. I have a smaller Philips paired with a projector.

We find the ambilight a great feature in our setting and the smart features work really well, with a particular plus point for the voice input for searches on You tube etc. via the remote, or keyboard on the back of the remote if you wish.

Personally I'd buy the same brand as your 65 so you have a remote you're familiar with. Got 3 Samsung's with the little remote and it's great.

Bought the 55 qled from argos the other day (£649 I think) and seems pretty good to me

He's using a Firestick will all TVs, so matching brands won't offer much benefit.

Don't know why, but I don't have any regard for Philips TVs. They've probably got the same panel as the rest, and are good quality products, however I never saw them as a mainstream TV brand.

Currently attracted by this one: https://www.costco.co.uk/TVs-Electronics-Security/...

My plan is to wait until the model year changes come in next month, so I'm watching prices. If it's anything like when we bought the 65" the budget will be blown when I spot a reduced OLED or mega sound bar offer laugh

I've found in the past that Philips had terrible after-sales customer service - whether that is still the case . . .

Your best waiting a month or 2 as new models are released. This time last year I picked up a Samsung 55" Q80A for £500 from John Lewis which was a bargain as I was looking for a gaming TV which had 120hz and VRR.
