I was dusting off my old iPod that hadn’t been used for a few years and, as I’m sure you’ll appreciate, one thing led to another and I dusted off a load of old iPod kit - docks etc and fired it all up.
One of those pieces of kit was a KRELL Kid- The biggest, baddest, bestest, bonkerest iPod docks ever made. It had a matching power amp- the papa dock- which I don’t have.
A friend had the full set up which, at the time, I thought was wasted on low res mp3 on his iPod.
Anyway, I recall when the KID came out there was uncertainty about what it took from the iPod- whether it took an analogue feed or managed to get a digital feed pre-iPod dac.
At the time apple was very cagey (how strange?!!) about what signals third parties could obtain from the iPod.
I think there was a Wadia dock that had a special chip in to communicate with the iPod but it was never clear what the KRELL was doing.
I think I have the answer- after dusting off the old docks I bought a few of those cheap Bluetooth/ 30 pin dock adaptors which output an analogue signal.
Plugged one into the KRELL and it works so it seems the KRELL doesn’t take a digital feed- only takes an analogue feed and runs it through some decent amplification.
It’s the best sounding dock I have…
