AH CRAP, when you took the lid off you let out the high fidelity xenon atmosphere that the circuit board is cosseted in. The greater mass/density of the xenon gas means the resistors help stabilise impedance and so you get sparklier highs, which also gives you clear lows and singing mids. I bet when you put it back on you can hear the difference now there’ll just be air in there. If you do want to refill then you could use SF6 as a substitute, it’s a bit cheaper than xenon but you’ll hear it listening to a good reference recording.

I should take a pic of my Marantz CD player and see what people make of the contrast in quality.That would of course have to be in the context of the Marantz not actually working very well at the moment...
