My mum has a 32" Toshiba TV that's maybe 4-5 years old and it's absolutely useless.

The remote seems to need a ton of force on the buttons the interface on it is slow and doesn't seem to work half the time and simple things like scrolling up and down through the Freeview guide takes ages.

Basically it's stuff that you can't easily figure out if you're in a shop spending 2 minutes playing around with the remote.

She doesn't use the TV for anything fancy just watching Freeview and the odd bit of iPlayer.

Given the picture is OK I did wonder whether to get a cheap external Freeview box but she's not the best with technology and changing inputs and stuff like that.

Any suggestions on a sensibly priced TV that might fit the bill?

What size are you considering?

I think up to around 43" as there seem to be less and less 32" sets out there but the existing size is fine it's just a rubbish user interface.

I'd have thought playing with the remote to see how easy it is to use is exactly the sort of thing you could check with a visit to a shop. Have you got a Richer Sounds nearby?

Compared to what she has any reasonably priced (circa £400) 43 inch TV from Samsung, Sony or LG would be a large improvement. The deciding factor would probably be the UI

It's not ease of use that's the problem it's that the thing just seems to get stupidly slow.

Sometimes you press the guide button and it takes a second sometimes you press it and count to five.

Then you scroll up and down and it is slow as hell or just freezes for up to ten seconds then starts to scroll.

There's no rhyme or reason to any of it.

It's got the latest firmware and all that stuff so I assume it's just broken or there's some kind of firmware issue.

It's more than likely your mum's Toshiba is made by Vestel. This 43" QLED from TCL will therefore be a massive improvement in picture quality, without breaking the bank.

It's running Android, so the user interface for smart features is also very intuitive.

You might not have heard of TCL, however they are one of the largest manufacturers of TV's in the world.

For me the main decider would be the UI & that's something I wish i'd known before I bought my Sony. LG are often said to have a good UI & I don't like the Sony one. Even more reason to go & see them.

I've got a Sony KDL 32...
Great TV Sounds pretty good for a thin TV has iPlayer built in, remote works fine
Not a current model but they still make several 32" models.

I find Android TV OS terrible. Samsung is much better.

Perhaps you tried an earlier iteration. Google TV is widely considered one of the slickest and most intuitive interfaces available.

Agree with that

In this instance I would suggest something like this as the replacement

You can get something like a Hisense 43" E7 for £300, Qled and full array backlight. It'll be better then other cheap TVs for £300.

Just to add/mention the bulk of what she watches seems to be Sewing TV or old episodes of stuff like Escape to the Sun on Really so whilst it may be default these days I'm not sure QLED 4K and all that stuff offers much benefit here smile

Probably, it’s on a 2010 Bravia but I assumed the updates would keep it, well, up to date. I guess that only holds for a certain amount of time before the hardware can’t run the latest OS.

True but 4k etc is pretty much standard. In essence any modern TV from any of the major brands will be better than what she has

We bought the 50" for the kitchen.
It's darn good.
