Like behind the knob, what's the switch thing and how important is it to the sound quality?

I want to control the volume from a knob on my desk and truck the amp out of the way. Could I remove the switch thing without screwing up the sound?

I can use an Arduino, a rotary encoder and a servo to turn the amp dial, but it might be easier to remove the knob and run a few wires.

It would probably be much cheaper to use an IR repeater?

It depends what amp it is.

Some have a traditional potentiometer, but that's pretty rare these days. Most have a rotary encoder.

If you can turn it and there are no end stops, then chances are it's a rotary encoder.

Extending the wires wouldn't be a good idea from an interference point of view, however you could control it some other way.

However.... Does the amp not have remote control? Why not tuck it out of the way, and simply use an IR repeater?

ETA: If it's a stereo amp then could well have a standard potentiometer. Extending the wires here is a definite no.

If it's a traditional potentiometer 'volume pot' it's 6 wires to extend, and prone to interference from your PC or whatever.

Remote control volume pot can be got from ebay for about £20, but it can be major dismantling of the amp.

You can get a volume knob in a box under the pretentious title of 'passive pre-amp' with or without tone controls.
Tend to be pricey for what they are.

You can get a pre-amp with some op-amps in with a little +/-15V supply,
If your source (PC?) has a digital out, you can get a little Prozor DAC with a volume knob for about £20.

This, I have my amp inside a cupboard and use a £9 usb powered ir extender.

All a DC servo needs is a power supply and a control voltage, you could do that with just the servo and a simple linear potentiometer.
