I am probably in the market for some new floor standing speakers.

My current Spendor s-9e are a little tired now.

I have a paiur of bridged Meridian G57 amps to drive them and they need to be able to wake the dead with rock music loud enough that you can feel it through the sofa and also be faithful to gentle classical background music.

Where should I start looking for £5k or less?

My plan on this would be to visit local hifi dealers and ask if they do home demos. Without using speakers in your own room it’ll always be guesswork, as there are so many variables.

I'll just second this. For example, I recently bought a pair of Dali Oberon 5s. Very well reviewed, with only review criticism I have seen being 'not the most bassy'.
In my intended listening room? Unpleasant bass thump. Try in another room? Sound great.

All usual hifi recommendations of listening to a range of options to find your personal taste notwithstanding.

At that price point I’d personally be listening to

ATC SCM40
ATC SCM19A (active)
PMC Twenty5.24i
Proac D30RS
Spendor D7.2

For starters if buying new.. lots more options used of course (but harder to demo).

I’ve got PMC Twenty5.24 and like them a lot, they can rock out and do delicate very well. I’ve got some ATC stand mounts too and would like to try their active big brothers out one day.

Have fun with the search thumbup

^This^ - all day long

I'd create a short list, pop along to your local dealers, do some listening, once you hit that "oooh that's stunning!" moment organise a home demo.

Your home will often sound different to the demo room at the dealers.

Let your ears decide

Always loved ProAc as my old studios were brilliant for what you're describing. Great bass but an open, natural top end.

At my age I've hung up my rock hifi days and have gone down the Martin Logan route. I have since added a sub for movies but find it's also great for supplementing some recordings that are a bit lean.

I didn't buy them for rock but they're actually pretty good and a few parties has had the whole house resonating laugh. The speed and transparency of the ESL is astonishing but an acquired taste, as are the looks.

As above though, go visit a decent dealer. Mine is based in Biggleswade and is brilliant with home demos. The fact he's a total petrolhead is a bonus. Totally sound guy (no pun intended) and a pleasure to deal with. But any dealer worth their salt will work with you to get the best outcome.

Not sure you'll better these. They won't have the loudest low end you'll find but they will almost certainly be the best in ever other area.

Good price too

Thank you for the recommendations I now have a plan.

I am getting a pair of Spendor D7.2s delivered in a couple of weeks and will try these for a weekend then will work through a few others on the list above till I find something that works well in my room.

My current Spendors are lovely but old and things have moved on somewhat.

Thanks again all for your input.
