I bought the Panasonic TX50JX800B from Richer Sounds which seems an absolute bargain at £250, but I was wondering if anyone else has one and has tried recording to a USB drive.

I was thinking of a 256GB memory stick, but the manual says that the recording device must have its own power supply.

This is probably because the TV only has USB2 sockets and some devices require more power than the interface supplies. Check the power requirements of your USB stick but I'm sure it will be OK.

My Panasonic TV has two USB2 ports and one USB3. The manual says I should use the USB3 port but my USB hard drive is plugged in to one of the USB2 ports and records fine.

Yeah, I can imagine that a spinning HDD type may draw more than the 500mA minimum limit of a USB socket, but an SSD should draw less.

USB3 has a 900ma current limit, hence better suited to a HDD - but a USB stick of any size should be fine in a USB2 hole. That said I've found some equipment with USB2 sockets rather fussy about recognising some USB3 sticks.

I've got the 58" version and very happy with it but can't get it to connect to my nas despite installing plex, kodi and VLC.

I tried a 64GB USB thumb drive that I had available but the TV said it was incompatible. It gave no indication of why but maybe because of the size. Their specs page says it must be at least 160GB

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/televisions/... (See note *12)

So, I've ordered a 256GB drive to test that.

I’ve got a 5-year old Panasonic 4K TV. Initially for recording I used a Maxtor USB hard drive with its own power supply. Then I became concerned about the power draw of the power supply being on 24/7 and also the fire risk. I replaced it with a Toshiba Canvio Basics Portable External Hard Drive which is intended to be used with a laptop and is powered via the USB socket when needed. This has worked fine for over 2 years. The last time I tried a USB drive it didn't work, probably because the write speed was too slow to keep up.
