Sky glass TV and AV amp help please

Firstly not a usual suspect in this section of PH as I’m far from an audiophile so apologies in advance for jumping in to glean information .

Despite been perfectly happy with my 1 year old Samsung 55” 4k UHD telly, SWMBO decided she had to have the new sky glass telly. I wasn’t that keen but as I was up for renewal with Sky I pretty much got the 65” thrown in for same price as old contract.

Main question I asked Mr Salesman was did it have optical put to support an AV amp and got the usual yeah yeah reply. Telly turns up today and get ready to connect everything up…. Yup, no bloody optical input .

So , I have a TV with HDMI ports and no Optical out, and a Yamaha receiver with Optical out but no HDMI ports.

How buggered am I ??

Which model - if it doesn't have HDMI then I suspect quite an older model that would not be able to make best use of Dolby processing up to and including Atmos etc.

If you are not happy with the sky glass sound, it may be time for an amp upgrade.

It’s a Yamaha R-N602 .

I don’t have full surround sound or anything overly fancy. I just have a pair of Mission floor standing speakers and Cambridge Audio sub. I used to use it to play the TV through as well as music etc.

Annoying, but a wife-proof excuse to buy a better amp, surely.

It doesn’t do what the salesman told you, send it back
Wife can’t blame you as it’s Skys fault
You will get money off, also not tied to Sky for the next 4 years

The R-N602 isn't some old non-HDMI AV receiver from yesteryear. The word 'receiver' applies to any amplifier with a radio tuner. Hence a stereo amp with a radio tuner is a receiver. This Yamaha has is both modern and decent. It's simply a stereo receiver rather than an AV receiver.

I bought something similar to convert optical to 3.5mm audio - the catch is that you need to use the receiver remote to turn up the volume, you can't do it on the TV - not sure if that's the same with these HDMI to optical convertors.

If Sky doesn't have a solution for HDMI ARC audio out to optical then Sonos and third party companies do.

It does have to be an ARC audio extractor. A simple HDMI audio extractor as posted in one of the previous replies won't work. The standard HDMI inputs on a TV won't give an audio signal out. It has to be the ARC or eARC socket, and the extractor has to be made to take that signal rather than simply splitting audio from say a Blu-ray player or streamer in the middle of the signal going to the TV.

Interesting.

Will be moving soon and will be setting up Sky at the new house, so this Glass thing may be of interest.

Love my current Yamaha AV amp which the telly, DVD, CD and Sky HD box runs through, but it's getting on a bit now (six years of daily use) and will need replacing soon, so any AV amp recommendations will be welcomed.

A new amp is an option but the problem doesn’t really warrant spending another £500+. Same
Applies to the wife, I’m pretty well invested in that too

Just had a look on back of the Glass Tv and it does have HDMI 2 (eARC) which looks like a useable option.

Lucid_AV, could you link me to something that would plug into the TV’s eARC socket and into the receivers Optical Out please ? I literally have no clue what I’m looking for !

Oh yeah, see what you mean. I've had 4 or 5 Yam receivers - but only AV ones.

I already did in my previous reply. The words "Sonos" and "third party conpanies" are both hyperlinked. The first to the £25 Sonos adapter and the second to a £35 box of tricks on Amazon.

Both devices will require a length of HDMI cable from the eARC socket to these things. The box then needs an optical cable to go to the amp's optical input.
