Hi all, I have an aging Yamaha RX-A1040 AVR. This is pre atmos stuff and the best i can get is DD True HD or DTS Master Audio.

I'm fairly happy with this set up in 5.1 mode. Recently I have been thinking i may try and use 7.1 utilising the Front Presence speakers.

Obviously there will be some cost to this. I have speakers I could try but id have to buy cabling.

Anyone gone from a 5.1 to 7.1 incorporating the Presence speakers at the front? Would DDTHD and DTSMA make use of these speakers or would it be fake" surround that i got from these.

My terminology maybe incorrect of some terms. I'm more 2 channel generally, so please go easy.

Thanks all.

I did it years ago with an amp that allowed it, can't remember which now though. I believe it was just matrixed from the existing signals, so not a 'discrete' signal to the presence speakers (a bit like old Dolby Prologic derived the surround signal from a stereo input).

It did add a bit of height effect, though quite subtle unless you cranked up the settings. Then it added a sort of annoying 'bubbling/underwater' effect to speech so could become distracting, so keep them set to how the AVR auto setup balances them (or use an SPL and the amp test tones).

I just used a much cheaper version of my LCR speakers, though they had a similar driver, but just fewer of them, in a smaller cabinet.

To be honest though, I think you'd maybe gain more from adding surround back speakers if you have the space behind the sofa: You need at least a metre or so though, no point having them firing at the back of your head if the sofa is against a wall.

Other more left field suggestion: save the money and put it towards upgrading the LCR and/or subwoofer sometime in the future: I still regret spending loads of money upgrading to Atmos and using speakers in the ceiling that were previously my LCR speakers. In hindsight, it was the upgrade to the LCR and subs that made the biggest difference and they do the most work.
