Question about ARC tv-amp
Discussion
Hi all
"these days" You can pass sound from your telly back down to your AV Receiver (e.g) via ARC) .
Now, I have my Amp and connect my Blu-ray and my ps4 to HDMI inputs on the back, HDM1 and HDMI2 respectively. I then have HDMI out on my amp going up to the telly. When I want to watch blu ray I select HDMI1 as my input on the amp and I get sound. For PS4 I select HDMI2 and get sound.(and picture obviously)
Prior to ARC I had an optical(TOSLINK?) cable from the back of the telly to an optical input on my amp and had to select AV4 as input for that to work and give me the telly sound via amp to my surround speakers.
With ARC, how do I know, or indeed do I have to, what to select as the input on the amp? The sound from the telly is coming down into the 'HDMI out' on the amp so Im a bit confused.
I feel sure the apps like Prime/Netflix on the telly should be passing 5.1 down to the amp but I never get it only stereo.
Last week I bought a high speed HDMI cable in case it was that, connected between HDMI out and the telly but still the same.
For info amp is a yamaha RX-v671 and telly is LG OLED CX
Thanks

Do you have a "TV" source button on your receiver (amp)? Pressing that should give you your TV sound through the receiver and you don't need to worry any more than that With ARC, how do I know, or indeed do I have to, what to select as the input on the amp? ARC's still a bit voodoo like in that not all combos of receiver/cable/TV will give all positive outcomes.I feel sure the apps like Prime/Netflix on the telly should be passing 5.1 down to the amp but I never get it only stereo.

You need to check that your apps are set up to pass through 5.1 sound. You need to check that your TV can pass through digital sound signals from the TV to a receiver via HDMI...you have the cable sorted. You then need to check the receiver will take it.
I was also having headaches with my Denon receiver, and it turns out I also needed to disable any and all sound stage mucking about the receiver is cable of ("theatre", "stadium", "movie" etc...as soon as I put the Denon in "pure" mode, all was well).
HDMI ARC might seem a bit voodoo at first, but it's really not. There are a few ducks you have to get in a row though before it all plays nice
Telly:
- HDMI Control enabled
- Audio out for ARC set to bitstream (not PCM)
- TV speakers/Home Cinema set to Home Cinema
Amp:
- HDMI Control on
- HDMI ARC enabled (see manual whether the ARC input is already set or needs to be assigned)
Sources:
- Audio out via HDMI set to bitstream (not PCM)
Even after all that, there may be times when either the source signal is Stereo rather than full surround DD5.1. When that happens, the amp.will default to ProLogic II or Dolby Upscaler mode unless you've set it to decode a different way.

It could well be a limiting factor on the TV rather than the amp or the cable - I'd certainly check those settings first to see if you have an option.
Given that you get audio you have all the connections right so it might just be a setting.
How old is the TV? I suspect older or cheaper kit is more likely to pass stereo than a newer, higher end TV.

A quick google suggests connecting HDMI Out from the amp to HDMI 2 on the LG TV should work, then follow the instructions above to make sure your TV is setup correctly. Thanks
