Dolby Atmos Speaker Placement Advice 5.1.4
Discussion
Now I don't know if the answer to this question is as obvious as I think it might be, but out of options 2 & 3 below, which would be the better one, and would there actually be much difference to the ears/spatial experience between the 2 set ups ??
Don't really want to skew the positioning of the ceiling and rear speakers, so hoping they could stay as it ??
We have the TV in the corner set up.
Thinking option 3 is just wrong, but is it actually, and should the rear and ceiling speakers actually be repositioned ??
Cheers.
Firstly Option 1 below is the recommended set up from Dolby website for a central TV set up, squares are floor mounted speakers, and circles are ceiling mounted, system is 5.1.4

Option 2

Option 3

option 2 but if posssible move the left front speaker to the left, what ampp do you have?? if it has an auto audio set up that will work out the distances and levels
Thanks, I haven't actually bought anything yet but looking at the Denon 3700 or 4700 which seem to be decent units, and I think both come with the auto audio set up.What is stopping the tv from moving to the middle?
As said above, layout 2, move the left speaker to the left, and make sure the distances to the main listening position (MLP) are set correctly in the amp/processor.
Then use the room equaliser with the amp to calibrate the room and it should sort out all the timings for the distances for you.
Can help with kit too, its what i do.

Basically we have a log burner in the centre with a high mantelpiece, so centre is definitely out.
As you say I think if timings and distances are set up reasonably well it should sound fine, I have a bit of flexibility with the positioning of the front speakers so can play with that as well.
Thinking about this a bit more i would put all the front speakers to the right of the log burner. But as far apart as possible with the tv in the centre. It may look odd but sound right.
If you put the speakers as it the tv was where the log burner is, the AVR will assume the tv is in the middle and centre the sound accordingly.
So if you pull all the speakers to the right the sound will centre around the tv accordingly.
Hope that makes sense.

Thanks again, will give that a try once I get everything organised, a few weeks away yet.If you put the speakers as it the tv was where the log burner is, the AVR will assume the tv is in the middle and centre the sound accordingly.

Finally got things set up and went with the above advice, moved front left speaker to left of log burner.I went for a Marantz SR7015 AV which seems to have a great auto set up function, along with Q Acoustics Sub, centre, and rear speakers. Fronts I already had are ProAc floor standers, and I added 4 x Monitor Audio C265 FX ceiling speakers for Atmos.
I have to say I'm very impressed with the sound from this set up, even though it might not be the optimum layout per se.
