Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting in an international PHer's forum so apologies if I am breaking any protocol!

I have seen that we have a small number of people on here who are based in Malaysia so I was wondering if one of them would be willing to help me out with my issue?

I currently own a Daihatsu Mira Avanzato TRxx R4 which is very similar to a Perodua Kancil and I know that there is a bit of a kei car scene over in Malaysia. The problem that I have is that the turbo has seized on my Avanzato and due to it being one of only 86 originally sold in the UK there are next to no used spares available for these cars, especially turbos. I have spoken to my local Daihatsu dealer about getting a new one and I was quoted £1500 which is almost as much as the car will be worth when fixed.

I have had a few contacts from Malaysia through a Kei cars forum of which I am a member who all say they are willing to help but when it comes to getting a price etc, everything seems to go quiet.

Using websites such as Mudah.my I have seen the same turbo I am after for between 250-400RM which Google tells me is £50-80 which is obviously a great saving. I have tried contacting the sellers asking if they would be willing to post back to the UK but I get no response. So basically I am after someone who would be willing to buy a turbo and post it back to the UK plus an agreed amount on top to cover time and effort.

If you think you can help me, I would really like to hear from you. Apologies for the long post.

I can help as well. No need for the "agreed amount for time and effort" malarky either, which I'm sure you will find is also the case with Berw. smile

As an aside though, have you considered sending the blower into someone like Turbo Technics to get refurbed? It might not cheap as chips, but two issues are:

1) Condition of any used turbos here may be suspect. Berw or I can do a visual inspection and check for shaft play etc, but ultimately you don't know until you put it on a car. The Kancil scene here does have modders and turbo nutters, but generally speaking, the reason they have a Kancil in the first place is because they can't really afford anything else (cheapest car in the country), so don't expect first-rate maintenance or general mechanical sympathy to be high on the agenda.

2) Turbos, even small ones, are heavy things. Shipping won't blow the bank, but I suspect it ain't gonna be cheap either.

With these in mind, it may be worth your while sending in the turbo for a refurb.

But in any case, happy to help.

I don't have a problem with supplying a few beer tokens to people for spending their valuable time doing stuff for me. After all, it means that I can get my car back on the road.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I would love to be able to send my turbo for a refurb but nobody can get the kit for it. It's an IHI RHF3 VQ29 and I, aswell as a number of other people in the past have enquired with turbo refurbishment places only to be told that they can't source a refurb kit. I have looked everywhere and I can find a kit for every other IHI turbo but not the RHF3!

Berw, I will reply to your PM in a moment.

Boulder, if you give me the expect specs of the turbo, I can probably source the kit for you over here without any trouble. I'm sure all the big turbo places here have the bits for the blower on a Kancil. Would be a lot easier to ship over to you as well. smile

Sorry - just noticed you gave the turbo model. I can make a couple of calls tomorrow if you like to see if any local joints stock a refurb kit for your blower.

You can try and have a ring around if you have time. I think it comes down to postage costs to be honest. If I go with a rebuild kit, I still need to pay someone to rebuild it and then get it balanced etc whereas I can fit the second hand turbo myself so there is no other associated costs once I have it. I think it might be a case of seeing what the prices will come out as and make a decision from there.
