any PHers in Kuala Lumpar?
Discussion
Yes there are at least two, I am an expat and live in the center of the city, and there is local guy from Petaling Jaya just outside KL.
What do you want to know? I've been here 13 years, and run and race a coulle of bike and cars, imported cars from the UK, built a few kits here, restored a couple of classics, bought property, changed jobs, married, etc so I think I'm up on a few things

Hi Dead Lock sorry your contact on my home computor, when you next in KL center? I will be at my home in Bukit Bingtang tomorrow saturday, as my E24 is ready to collect from the garage in Cheras tommorow, and then for the next few weekend I'll also be in Kl, if you fancy doing as we said and meeting.
thanks for the response and indeed the pm berw, very appreciated.
Helping sway my opinion, although prestige cars seem nuts to find/buy/insure. I have seen a nice classic 1275GT and even a nice alfa sud... E24, top marks collegue sold one here in Aberdeen went for £1500 in the end in GC. Always been a huge fan of these, is it a manual by any chance?

a rust free 1275GT, now that is a rare sight in my current waters. You have my attention.
Any general driving advice? What side of the road, wiki information seems a bit vague. How much is fuel.
Basically it seems like tax on anything imported is horrific unless you buy a malaysian produced cars... pie int he sky thinking i was wondering about a 2 seater with a reliablish, easy sourced malaysian engine, bad idea?
Is it worth importing a car?

Less courteous than in the UK, and with key roads that are pretty much always clogged from 9:00am to 9:00pm, but in general, nowhere near as bad as Bangkok or Jakarta. You can get around by car and have to learn the local driving culture - it's not that hard really once you get used to it.istoo said:

RHD. Same as in the UK.istoo said:

37p a litre for 95, 44p a litre for 97. Almost nobody drives dervs.istoo said:

Yes, tax here is astronomical on imported cars. A two-seater Malaysian-made car (all cars with Malaysian engines are made here too - we don't export engines because nobody else wants our junk) does not yet exist. All cheap reasonably priced cars with locally-made engines have a maximum engine capacity of 1.8 litres, and they are all boring four-door whitebox Protons and Peroduas. End of. The reason for the high tax on imported vehicles is to protect the local car industry. Without the tax, NOBODY would buy local cars, because they really are turds compared to the competition (but are still perfectly usable, reliable and servicable cars for running around day-to-day, it must be said).istoo said:

Nope. Taxes are a pain and you end up paying potentially more. Virtually any car you'd want to import, you can get here for cheaper on the used market. Any car that you can't get here, you don't want to import, as parts and servicing will be non-existent. Part of living here and wanting nice cars is being willing and able to pay for them. There's no way around it (legally, anyway). Else, drive around classics for shoestring fun (e.g. E30) or just live with a local econobox for the duration of your tenure here.Hi Deadlock, can you still get the Buforio, that was a Malaysian made two seater, and the TD 2000 was made by Proton. Istoo these are copy MGF things they run jap engine, Subaru? but are so expensive as to be unreal You can get a locally made Elise a 10 year old MK1 will fetch 20000 Pound at least.
There was a fantastic 924 Prsche on Mudah the other week for 30,000 Rm, went to look at it but manual so not what the wife wanted, hence the 944 purchase, but it was perfect. MGF's are availble at resonable money (40K) now and then, nad you can sort the engine (WRX transplant?). .
My comments are buy a old rust free car and get it rebuilt, look at R and J Classic cars on the web http://www.randjsportsandclassiccars.com/ (the two sevens are mine), Robert can rebuild any thing, The 240Z is fantastic I saw it in Bukit Bingtang a few weeks ago, nearly bought it, but no parking left.

must be fate, a lecturer of mine had a 240z when i was at uni (nearly 20 years ago) And then after 2 decade sabatical, I saw one today in Inverurie. Christ i want one badly. No rust over there. hey no snow either!
924's i have never been a fan. 944 however, oh yes. TR4 also like, a GT6 oh now your talking. Classic 1275GT, now there is an itch i would love to scratch. I love car shopping, agers and mileage dont put me off at all. Currently have a 16 year old Audi S4 avant with 194,000 miles on the clock and 290bhp as my daily. Worth sod all but i know it inside out, thus is it worth importing?

I will get the email address for my contact for car imports and email you with it, i normally deal by phone. he will give you an estimated price, he got my Sylva in, but I'd say dute at least 5,ooo pound plus 3 for freight and cost so no, not worth it, plus it takes months, my car came in in 2002 because I was staying, it will take 4 to 6 months before you get here plus 2 months to register it, and you can not sell it when you leave you need to take it back. (unless you get speciel permission).
The guy I email you is OK no fee until the car is in the country, nothing up front so he is commited to get the car in, there are people who will tell you they can do anything and then disapear with the upfront fee, do not pay anything up fron to any import agent in Malaysia.
The Dastun is super, it was ouside the pub, and I nearly bought it for my boy.
R and J are good, they charge 8 pound an hour and they can do anyhting they built a Renult for Peking Paris, they have done 3 cars for me, all reliable.

I'm thinking of moving to KL in about 2 years after we've got our son off to Uni. Lived there for about 12 months 8 years ago, great place. On the subject of car importation I believe you can bring in one car tax free per person. My plan is to bring in my E type and the wife will bring a newer car as a daily driver. While I lived there I met a Malaysian guy who lived near me in Damansara who had several E types so I assume it's viable to run them there.

Thats on the Malaysia My Second Home scheme i think, not sure if its one car per person or per household.John is right Malaysia my second home, one car must be new, must be Malaysian approved, you will not get a RR Farrarri, Bently Porsche or Aston, the custum man doesn't like peolpe who can afford those cars. If you have lived here along tiome an have contacts, and change fro Morking to MM2H you may get one of the above list but even then not the RR. So the E type is out as to old. If you pay duty and can get it in yes it is very easy to run here.
