Hello all,

Just on a basic 'information gather' and I am looking to hear from any one who has lived in The Philippines.
I don't really just mean 'been there for 2 weeks vacation, but if may be you have had a few months there, can you share what you know?

Yep, I lived there for nine years, and moved back to the UK 8 years ago tomorrow.

And last month we went for a holiday there and the wife now wants to move back for good. I find the idea somewhat appealing, but I really don't want to leave my workshop and tools and stuff behind. frown

Ship 'em out there ... will cost about 3 - 4k for a 40 footer high cube container, pack the tools and the car in along with any bits of furnature that the missus wants to keep, then off you go!

For the workshop, just forget to give the container back .....

We're planning to rent our house out while we're gone, so we'll probably leave a load of stuff locked in the workshop, in case it all goes pear shaped out there.

I've been trying to work out the politics and coffee money required to import a hot rod to the Philippines, but can't seem to get to the bottom layer of facts yet.

Can make a few enquiries from here, as there is a lot of paralell importing of used cars (although perhaps not of quite the vintage of yours .... ) from here to various countries in SE asia.

As an aside, you realise that you would be able to import the car into Singapore now and run it on a classic rego and the only charge would be 7% GST on the agreed value of the car.

Just agree that its only worth $100 smile

If you could have a dig around it would be great. biggrin

It was registered in 1983, as a kit car basically, so that makes it more than 25 years old, a 'classic' I guess.

All I seem to turn up on Google is other people asking the same import procedure question on forums. And most answers tell them it would be more trouble than it is worth.

I discovered the 'Manila Sports Car Club', but the last action on their website appears to have been in '07. confused

This car would definitly turn a few heads driving down Orchard road. hehe

(when it is finished, that is)

Well, after lots of investigations into taxes and costs, it looks like we'll be sending some biggish crates over rather than a container. frown

The rod will stay in the UK for the moment, as the chances of getting totally fleeced by the customs mob in the Philippines was looking pretty scary.

I'm in the same position at the minute with regards to cars. Right now I'm trying to fix importing a Dax or Caterham in bits and building it at our house in Phili once we move there permanantly at the end of the year from Bangkok. It's too much cash to bring a car as a whole it seems but sending car parts isnt so bad.

My wife was talking to a specialist Filipino shipping company called www.highlightexpress.co.uk today, about taking our car to the PI, and he advised not to take it as a whole car but to strip it down, leave the motor and gearbox behind, and just import it as car parts. Labelled as home made car body and chassis it might not attract too much attention, hopefully.

Apparently the guy has shipped several classic cars before and once the crocodiles in customs see it on the shipping list the $$$$ signs ring up in their eyes.

I think I have a buyer now, so it may be sold soon, if not, who knows.

ps. She can't get that web page to open in the UK, but I can out here on my ship, so not sure what the problem is.

from the M*A*S*H series when Hawkeye arrives in the stolen jeep, in order to "dispose" of it without raising any questions, Radar posts the jeep piece by piece back to his home in the USA.
