Just found these forums! Anyone else in Indonesia?

Didn't realise these forums existed. Guess they're not exactly populated all the time
I'm currently in Kalimantan, Borneo and was based in Medan earlier this month. Due to the nature of my work, I tend to move all over Indo and often pass through Jakarta.
As a recent expat to Indo, I was curious to hear from any other PHers out in this part of the world? Not exactly the greatest place to drive, Jakarta especially, but you never loose the desire too!

Stratos, top lurking that man....only 7 posts in 16 months!!!!
When i said i am enjoying it, what i meant was i am enjoying Indonesia, as a (w)hole . Cilegon is livable, i have a comfortable villa there for my accomodation and my office environment is very good so im happy with that. I have only been out to eat in a couple of restaurants locally and found the supermarket for some decent food. At weekends i have ventured up to Jakarta and that is very to my liking, although the only let down, i feel, is that you can not walk anywhere as there are no pavements so its car or taxi everywhere, which is a bugger. Apart from that its all good.

Stratos i am intending to check out the west coastal route this weekend, from Ciligon down to the southern end on the look out for decent resorts on the seaside just incase i need a retreat to chill out, rather than chasing up to Jakarta and getting ratted every weekend?
Do you, or anyone else come to that, know of anywhere i should check out?

ooops, probably too late now! I don't personally, no; but some friends have mine have done some exploring of resorts, hotels etc in that area. I suppose you know about Pelabahan Ratu (on the south coast)? I'll ask my mates for a list of places.Do you, or anyone else come to that, know of anywhere i should check out?
I went down the west coast as far as Tanjung Lesung and to be honest wasnt too impressed at what i found, looked at a few resorts along the coast and they were either on their last legs, seen better days or just over-priced for what they offered, (Vietnam, i take it all back). Maybe i didnt go far enough but was pretty despondent after going that far, so will have to wait to check out reviews on Travel Advisor or wait for personal recommendations.
On a different note i did get to see the volcano Krakatau off the west coast, now i was always under the impression that this volcano was off the east coast, from the old movie "Krakatau East of Java". Wiki expalins all.......

I was going to mention Tanjung Lesung, purely because I know one of the developers, not from any personal experience. In my experience you have to turn a somewhat blind eye to most Indonesian resorts and just enjoy the good bits. (They often start well, but have little to no idea of the concept of maintenance, so things get a bit seedy.)
I got a couple of recommendations for you off a mate who spent some time exploring various parts of Java (and from memory had much the same impression of the West Coast as you did):
"Batu Keras was my favourite as it was pure location at a reasonable cost. We stayed at Java Cove Hotel (0265 7082 020) owned and run by Aussies Paul and Nikki. I loved it as it had the surfing on sand beaches, ability to surf at low cost and ability to walk most of the way back and not have to paddle. [His wife]loved the walking aspect around the villages. we also discovered many things to do other than surfing. Additionally, we discovered we could actually fly there at quite cheap prices from Halim Airport... 80 minutes rather than the 10 hr slog on the road. Use Susi Air Jakarta... 0852 2358 6570 @ Rp1.5mill / person return. Need to organise taxi at other end to get to Java Cove Hotel directly.
"There are other places to stay that are cheaper but it is a good place to start with. A new resort is being constructed next door which is ruining the ambiance but that is progress. Some Aussies own another hotel at the intersection into Batu Keras so it might be an alternative if construction noise is too loud.
"Another place we loved but is expensive was Tiger Is... [Pulau Harimau] part of the Thousand Is group. Ring Cynthia Devi... 0852 2031 1038. Great if you have a child who can swim and doesn't need watching. WONDERFUL for snorkelling, romatic environment, all inclusive but expensive. Boat takes off early Sat morning arrives Sat about 10.30 am and returns Sunday Afternoon 3pm ish. Good for a long weekend so having an extra day. "
Hope those tips from my mate are of some use.

OK car nuts with reasonable experience in Indonesia, I have a question: my Indonesian is pretty weak and I haven't been able to find out what Indonesians call a wrecker's, breaker's or salvage yard; I know they exist, I even know where one is, but I'd like to know what they are called so I can google stuff. Any ideas?

Are you looking for spares or a wrecked car? I have some links you can check (no in English sorry). http://www.berniaga.com/
http://mobil.tokobagus.com/
http://www.mobil123.com/
http://www.situsmobil.com/item-firstresult/inaviur...
and
http://jakartacity.olx.co.id/
also the link I posted before http://www.modifikasi.com/
I am sure there are many more but remember that most if not all the breakers yards will not have a web site.
Cheers
Malcolm
Thanks, the first three sites I already had bookmarked, and I'll play with the others a bit. To answer your question, I'm more interested in wrecked cars ie useful components to build stuff from. I want to know the BI term so I can search and also ask people where to look. They may not have a website, but the yards may well be mentioned on one, or maps etc, if you know what they are called
