Storing cars at Sepang?
Discussion
Guessing this is one for Berw.
Any idea of availability / cost for long term garage storage of a track car at Sepang?
Am going through different ideas for mine, one is to "SORN" it for 2 years in Singapore and use it as a track day car at Sepang for a bit before putting it back on the road again in Singa (perhaps)

John. Your right I know all about it.
At Sepang there are approx 50 garages on the right after the tunnel to enter the pit lane, all are rented at the moment, and the cost is 750 Rm per month, available April to Oct, I.e. after the FI to after the Moto GP., (they are allocated to the F1 teams for storage in between) you can only have one to store a non malaysian car, that is imported on a racing car bond, and is not allowed outside the pit track.
I race in the HK series and the have several, I sub rent from them, the garages are big, I have 3 lotus 7 in mine and room for a 4th, (filled with tools).
Why do you want one? I know some one who may be willing to share.

Sadly one answer in that ruins my idea ....
I have been wondering what to do with the porker reciently as i probably should not be doing 25,000km a year in it, plus the wife wants to do those 25,000km in something a bit more modern.
Unfortunately i don't have much storage so was thinking of de-registering the porker for 2 years (the maximum before it is struck off and cannot be re-registered) then keeping it at Sepang for the occasional track day.
However sounds like i have to do some sort of Malaysian Import thing.
Might have a look at Pasir Guidang and see if they are more relaxed.

John You could store it at Sepang for 6 months then keep it some where else in Malaysia and truck it in to Sepang, you could sub let at Sepang, how old is the car, if pre 1986 you could race it in the series I'm in and share a garage with a 'forigner' as I do. Storage In the Sepang area should not be a problem. The next race I'm in is the 25th July at Sepang, come along and have a look I know there is space in the garage next to me, which may be available as a sub let, Is there space at PG?when I was there the other week I thought you only rented the garage by the day, and it was expensive. I may transfer to PG monday to friday, and thought to take one of the cars down there to use mid week.
We race all sorts there are two GT 40's and 2 mini's on track at the same time, as I said come up and look on the 25th, if you have an eligable car I'm sure we can get pit pass or two, and they are only 50 Rm to buy if I fail. Gets you into the pit for the whole day of the MMS bike and car.
When I was at PG they had the pit lane and the paddock behind and if you went for a track day you could hire a garage, 100rm a day on the pit lane, and 50 rm for the back 'street' I think, expensive on a monthly rate, and I couldn't see how you would secure your bit as the dividing wall is at best flimsy,
We have been looking at storage at PG for the Project I'm on, industrial storage in PG is expensive as it is in demand and then you'd need to arrange transport to the track.
What I wanted to look into was getting a container in the car park at Sepang, second hand 40 footer is 4000rm, three cars inside, with a generator for the aircon/lights would be great. But need to be 'talked throught' first. You know what Malaysia is like if you write in you'd get a no, I plan to bring it up in conversation at the next opportunity with the right man and go from there. If I then had to move it over 'winter', I could load it onto a triuck once a year and leave it in the car park at my condo.
Remember track days are very limited at Sepang at the moment, so return on outlay would be Low.
To race with us you would need a roll cage, and full harness, plus a few other things, you could do it for 4,000rm

My driveway is available should you need a place to stow the porker. The only payment? The keys. :P
thought that would be the rates Berw, do you need any sort of race licence or at least to have passed some sort of "ability review" before being let loose on a track oin a race at Sepang.
I have plenty of track day experiance, but its a whole different thing when racing against a whole grid ....

Berw, do you need any sort of race licence or at least to have passed some sort of "ability review" before being let loose on a track in a race at Sepang.
You can get a Malaysian Novice race Licence, no problem; all you need in effect is to complete the form from AAM
http://www.aam.org.my/motorsports/motorsports_lice...
You need to see a panel doctor get the list above, they will then supply and complete the application form, you need two passport photos. If over 45 you will need a stress test dated within last two years. (Approx 400rm) the medical is no problem. Fees are 100rm a year.
Also you need membership of a car club Singapore and Malaysia Classic Car Club is one of those listed.
And you need a release letter form you national race organisation, RAC if you are British, cot 27 pounds, assume as a PR you could use Singapore. This is aproblem as the letter must go direct to the AAM from the RAC, and guess what they loose it, so get acopy to your fax, and bring with you.
There are two organizations in Malaysia that do licences, but only AAM can do for non residents, you have to deliver the form in person, (not written down but believe me you need to do in person every year.).
After 6 races with no endorsement for the Clerk, you can get a full license.
There is no formal training, but the Clerk Of Course at Sepang will talk to you individually the first time you race, and there is a written test, which you take when you hand over the form at AAM , you need to be dead to fail it, just flags, and ‘don’t touch the line when you exit the pit’ you don’t need a road licence.
You can then race in National events, you need a yellow X on the car, John as I said come up to Sepang on 26th July. As you will read above formalities are easy, but as you know this is Asia, so the bureaucracy can be a killer.
For a track day all you need is to breath, there is a requirement at Sepang that if you don’t have a race licence then you must attend a briefing, but only ever seen this done once, took 20 minutes, (I thought it was great as I was the only person there with a licence so I got 20 minutes on Sepang on my own0.

to bring this back up to date, have started to form a cunning plan ....
Am thinking, when my COE runs out, to put the car on Classic registration here in singapore (this saves me about $3,000 a year in road tax, $2000 a year in insurance and i don't have to buy another $20k COE)
The catch is that i can only use it for 25 days a year in singapore (officially) but unlimited in Malaysia.
So, after some mods to the car (as it no longer needs to have daily driver comforts) to make it lighter and to give it some more lairyness in the engine, was thinking of renting a secure private garage for it for a few months a year in KL or similar ... (does such a thing exist) then get a modern smoker for the commute to work and to the porker of a weekend ...
Never know, I may even be brave enough to have a go at a few of the HKCC races.

Hi John
The last month has been busy at Sepang, there are two blocks of 25 gasrages each, facing each other, (like lock ups on a housing estate), we are in the middle of the north block, two weeks ago the two end garages caught fire, an AM race car brought in for the Asia championship and a full spare and tool package went up in flames, I've got a pictuure of what is left (a nice roll cage, I'll try to post it).
Any way access to the garages has been limited as the fire dept wont let them turn on the power for the electric doors.
Looking at getting a 40 foot container in the car parl cost is 100Rm a month to rent the space, and then buy a cheap container, problem is i am told that there is adanger tha tthe mangement camn move containers without informing the owner, so everthing inside need o be tied down every time it is left, investigating this further at the moment.
Ther have been a few track days of late, and there is a private track day on Saturday next, and presumably a open one on Sunday.
next race is the weekend of 2nd OCt, there is then a Hill Climb near Ganting Highland on the 9th, if you fancy comming up.
