COE Cars in Singapore
Discussion
Want to get a car over here, but don't want to drop too much cash. As I'll only be here a year or so I was wondering if it was worth getting a COE car with a couple of years to run. Anyone know of any downsides to this cunning plan? Other than I'll probably be running about in an early 90's civic....
Lots of great COE Cars out there ... (i assume you have found http://www.sgcarmart.com)
Car ownership is complex, here is a summary as i understand it.
You have an OMV (origional market value) that they use to calculate th evalue of the 120% import duty.
Then you have PARF value (cant remember what it means) is the tax rebate if you scrap your car (sell on to an exporter) ... year 1 - 100% PARF Value, etc till year 9. This PARF Value is the "high paper value" that come stealers whitter on about.
so, if you buy a COE car, you will get no tax rebate for the car if / when its scrapped, just the value that the exporter gives you.
COE Cars pay more road tax too ....
11 years +10%
12 years +20%
13 years +30%
14 years +40%
15 years and more +50%
(road tax calculators can be found on www.onemotoring.com.sg)
Generally the depreciation on a COE Car has been done, and the only variables should be the amount of COE.
Also now is a cheap time to reniew a COE.
Ohh and you will only get 3rd party insurance on a COE Car.
doesn't have to be a ratbag honda civic though
BMW 318IS
Lotus Elan M100
1303 Bug
Merc 380SLC
Merc 200E
All sub $30k
or for the more extravagent .... fezza Mondial QV
Ubi is one of the better places to start window shopping, with the AML building being the place to start.

I'm being a tightwad and setting my budget at S$10k tops!!! Didnb't know you only get 3rd party though... might have to look at parf cars instead!!
That merc does look pretty good value for here, one of my friends has one and they do drive welll considering engine/bodysize..

$10k can get you an old merc or beemer too, the problem is that as COE's have been so cheep reciently, all these good COE cars have had a new COE put on them to bump up value.
At the end of the day, its very hard to get a cheep car in the UK sense ....
Other options, something old and interesting (alfa Junior / Porsche 911 etc .. ) they will cost $40 - 60 now, and should sell easily for the same again in a year or so!

I'm really tempted by some of them, but not sure they will return the same value when I need to move on.... Convince me one way or another.... I need some wheels!HappyGoLucky said:

The alfa GTV 2000 here is asking 32k and i am sure has some negotiating in it....

John, you are a bad, bad, bad man! Have made enquiries on half of their bleedin' stock! The wife is going to kill me!
Autobahn are an interesting bunch, some cars are priced in fantacy land, some are very realistically priced ... the reason is that some cars are stock, some are on consignment, and the owner has a barking idea of value (was an absolutely sexy bright orange Esprit Turbo in there that i was drooling over a while ago but they wanted $200k for it ... also a basket case rangie P38 for $120k.
But on the flip side, that alfa is a stonking price i recon, and has been there for about 2 months so shoul dhave some room for negotiation. They also have a rather nice Merc SL (Bobby Ewing) for, i think, 28k.
If you know where to look there are some very cool cars in Singapore!! Also, Pasir Guidang is a fantastic little track for a pay and play saturday over in Eastern JB!
BTW, i probably should not meet your missus, she may want to kill me
arse ... now you got me looking at them ... that 930 Turbo
I am sure i can find some way to justify to the wife that we NEED 2 old aircooled 911's in Singapore
who am i kidding?!?!

I have been looking at that car for several months now ... problem is that its not road legal / registered for road use ..... and have you ever seen a car with a tow bar / trailer in Singapore?? Thats because its illegal to tow unless you own a registered haulage company
have been looking at this one for a while now too ... has a rather interesting root supercharger conversion http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=320...
anyway ... something tells me that a bar is open somewhere

It's lovely and I've always liked them especially the TWR ones! Problem being is I've set myself a very miserly budget and this beast is only 4.7 x what I've allowed myself!!
XJSHappyGoLucky does have a nice ring to it though......

i actually went and had a look at this car, and (Aside from some awful wheels) it is in lovely condition ... something that could almost be tempting but for a bit of a parking space issue!!!http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=306...
there are a few 3.6 XJS's in singapore and unsurprisingly no V12's.
