Folks,

Know there is one or two of you here that are based in My

I may be starting a new project that will involve 3 to 4 days a week in KL, and I don't think that I want to put the porker through that sort of mileage, so have been looking at the options of a Malaysian registered car, but there does not seem to be much info available (in singa especially) for this.

First, i know that there is a $25 / day charge for bringing Malaysian registered cars into singa, but this gets offset by the fact that I should not be getting the RM100 each way in police tolls that an SG registered car gets.

My thinking was something like a Toyota / Mitsu / Ford TDi Crew Cab of some sort (as these are unavailable in Singa and naturally I want what’s unavailable to me ... )

Anyway - anyone got ideas on car prices, and places to go looking at classifieds ... google finds very little.

Cheers.

John

perhaps we should prod the sleeping monster that is PH Tech department .. i have had a few go wandering too ...

Have learnt that in theory a Singa PR / EP holder cannot drive a Malaysian Car into singapore, but this is not "gospel", also no ideas of what happens when you are also an Malaysian EP holder.

Another trick seems to be Sarawak licence plates (start with an S and as such look like Singapore ones .... )

still recon it could be a go'er anyway!

Ok one more go,

I was actually in KL only last week and was scanning the second hand car sales in the local paper. I was particularly interested in BMW 6 series and the Merc CLS's to see what kind of money there are fetching there and amazed by what what i saw. Cars of 3 to 4 years of age were being advertised (privately) at around the RM300k, thats almost US$100k, big big money if you ask me, values of similar cars in the UK are dropping like stones.

I can only assume that the prices are being held high due to the high import tax levied on them when new.

Ahh different markets, European import cars are taxed higher than asian inport cars, and again in turn the lowest tax bracket is malaysian cars, and i already have one stupid car!!! wink

Don't come to Singapore if you are looking at those sort of cars though....

Dec 2006 Merc CLS 350 yours for $SG190k

Nov 08 M6 Suit you Sir? a snip at $sg350k

I was thinking more along the lines of a year or two old Mitsu or Nissan Crew Cab with a big fat TDI in it as i will be slogging up and down the N / S Highway.

New Mitsu Crewcabs are $sg45k on the road in KL.

It's not gospel, see here : http://www.lta.gov.sg/motoring_matters/motoring_gu...

Perhaps you can show your Malaysian EP if stopped in Singapore? wink

OK John im bassed in Kl and you can get some good deals, ignore the price give in the advert, I know of a e23 6 series went for half the advertised price last week and I'm told e32 740's are currently fetching 2500 rm (1000sing). Problem is in Malaysia the banks publish how muuch loan they will advance on each model of car, each year (due in April) and people think this is the selling price they can get.
Cars over 3 Litre are expensive on road tax so they are cheap, good mechanicas are cheap so older cars are agood buy as they can be fixed up cheaply.
I've bought my car and my wife cash from expats leaving the country and had great buys. Don't buy from the trade and you'll get a good price, if your in KL let me know and we can met and I'll tell you were to start ( e.g. Know for a farrarri for 40,000 sing).

Don't know what you want but I'm into classics, two websites worth a look are R and J sport and classic cars, and there's a guy in Damansara called Jag, mate of mine bought a great MGB GT from him a few years ago and he has some nice merc's, at good prices, in the paper from time to time. Also Auto Trader Malaysia, and On the Road are worth a look

Berw,

Classic's are usually my thing too (daily driver is now 35 years young ....) but for this situation, if the job comes off, i just need a smoker for the weekly grind up the north south from KL to SG and vice Versa, so at least 1000km a week.

Probably looking at a big lump of a Derv crewcab or an old merc TDi.

Anonymity, durability, comfort, reliability are the requirements.

(I have access to secure parking in JB so as to not use up all my Singa entry days.)

I always thought that once you had an EP, DP or S pass you were classed in the same way as a Singaproean and therefore were not allowed to drive an MY registered vehicle in SP, can't get the LTA link to load so can't say for sure. But If you've got secure parking across the bridge that could well be the answer for you.

ETA... Just got on to the LTA site and this seems fiarly conclusive....

Singapore citizens, permanent residents (regardless of their place of residence), student pass holders, long term social visit pass holder and residents of Singapore are NOT allowed to use or keep any foreign-registered vehicles in Singapore.

HGL appears to be correct unfortunately ....

If i was on a Malaysian EP only then no issue, even if my "home" was in Singapore, but had no specific residency here (alot of offshore O&G Guys do this as they spend more time offshore, no work visas are necessary)

Unfortunately it would seem that my Singa PR takes president (Singa PR trumps Malay EP at Woodlands Checkpoint) here and i would get carted off for rubber glove treatment if i dared bring a Malaysian car into singa!!

Bugger .... back to looking at expensive old Merc's!!

bds realy know how to ruin my fun ... i was starting to warm to the idea of a big 740i Battlebarge!!

edit for sudden brainwave ... unless i come in and out of Singa on my Irish passport .... if i can remember where it is .....

Used to to the visa runs from singa to My when i was first here 8 years ago too ... never got that complex though, just nipped over the causeway to the nearest petrol station for a tank of gas and 200 growlers every 2 weeks ... did that for about 8 months before getting off my arse and getting a real visa!!

I gather that they are a bit hotter these days, both ways ....

200 Growlers yikes

Ive always known a growler to be a hoes pussy, hence, after a few beers and shouting across the road to the ladies of the evening, "Show us yer Growler Darlin'", and they did hehe

Not sure why you wanted 200, and from a paetrol station too, i must come to Singers to see what youre on about wink

Growlers were cigarettes where / when i was dragged up!!

although its not that difficult or expensive (i suspect) to get your hands on 200 of your growlers here either ...
