You know this asian stuff, they go for the most stinky of fish / fruit that they can find, then "enhance" the essence of this flavour!!!!
(bit like us white guys and cheese )
what's the other thing that tastes and smells of fish ...... ohhhh .....

There are certain regions within Vietnam that produce the best fish sauce "Nouc Mam" and the locals go crazy for it. When you get within about....oh....around 20kms of the place you know youre not too far away. Heaven forbid if you stay there for any length of time, spend a couple of days in the town and your clothes become impregnated with the smell and even after leaving the place you can still smell it as its burnt its way into your nasal tract.
Days after your wondering why your work colleagues are giving you a wide berth, its because you smell like the inside of a hoes draws
Having said all of that, i am quite partial to it, in small doses with the right dish.

There is a lot to be said for a good old English Sunday Roast!!!
Some of the hotels do a not too shabby carvery here but it just does not seem to be quite the same!!
(i also find myself craving for proper English bacon!!!)
I go up to Saigon every other weekend to get away from the rural-ness of Vietnam and there are a few 5 star hotels which do a really top class Sunday buffet and they are to die for, extremely good quality, quantity and the wine is free flow. Plus they have roast beef, roast lamb, sometimes turkey with all the roasty bits too and yorkshires with lovely thick gravy. You can go in there at 11:30, eat seafood, sushi, "around the world" dishes, cheeses, different breads, then hit the roast and a brill selection of sweets, free-flow wine on tap and as many cocktails you can drink before you pass out, all before 15:00. Then its usually back to your hotel for a 3-4 hour relax and sleep it off. Some of the hotels do a not too shabby carvery here but it just does not seem to be quite the same!!

This will set you back US$30, i kid you not it is fantastically displayed too.
However i dont do this every other weekend, its a special occasion only otherwise it would become the norm and not special.
Funnily enough i am deep in the Mekong Delta region, living out of a 3 star-ish hotel and they do some fairly decent smoked bacon, not too fatty as you sometimes find in Asia, it does go nice with a well cooked omlet, im getting hungry all this talking about food

What is breakfast like - it is the one meal that the Japanese haven't got sorted.
Rice porridge and raw eggs - yeuggh!
Glen
True Vietnamese style breakfast is normally hot noodles with either beef (Pho) or seafood (Hai San) or in my hotel egg and bacon. In the Pho the beef is cut very thin and placed into the noodle raw so that it cooks in the bowl as you are preparing the herbs that you get with it, therefore the beef is slightly rare and extremely tender.Rice porridge and raw eggs - yeuggh!

As seen below:
Phumy - that looks quite good! I am just not sure that I want it for breakfast..... They also do spicy pork dumplings (with pickled veg) but that then repeats on you all morning!
As for the clown, yes it is everywhere over here but to be fair the quality is far far better than the UK or the US. And sometimes a sausage and egg muffin just has to be done - for the same reasons as a roast on Sunday once in a while!
