Relocating back to UK
Discussion
Totally forgot about the asia forum, it's not often I scroll down this far!
Anyway, I'm heading back home next month and I've got a few bits I need to take back (TV/Playstation/DVD collection etc) and DHL are quoting stupid money to send it! Does anyone know of any cheaper couriers in the area?
What about sharing containers? Any idea where I'd start looking?
Alternatively, anyone want a TV? The rest I can probably squeeze into a suitcase!

If the cubic capacity is not too big have you thought of excess baggage? might be a cheaper way of doing it, the plus side is that you get it home with you and not having to wait ages for it.Anyway, I'm heading back home next month and I've got a few bits I need to take back (TV/Playstation/DVD collection etc) and DHL are quoting stupid money to send it! Should be able to meet up with you for a farewell beer at the airport on Saturday, PM me your flight time and terminal and we can meet up (perhaps Harrys)
Is there a bar in Asia that you are not familier with?(posted from "Angkor What?", Bar Street, Siem Reap)

A lot of the movers like Fedex DHL etc will give you a fixed size, fixed price box of up to 25KG. I shipped my Desktop PC back wrapped in clothes in a 25 KG box for some reasonable sum. Dont seal it before they collect as they have to look inside and make sure you arent smuggling terrorists or semtex. Welcome to the new world. A lot of the big shippers dont want to ship small volumes as the individual inspection overhead makes it expensive for them and you and they dont make any money from it plus they have no history with you to allow self inspection. Presumably the shippers are liable should Osama turn out to be in your box (ooh er!)
The other option is the good old Singapore Post Office. When I moved back to the UK I was 20KG over at the airport and SQ wanted to charge me something like a S$1000 excess baggage. I walked around the corner in the airport and a very friendly guy peeked inside and then packed my suitcase in brown paper and shipped it to the UK for something like S$120. It got there the day after I did and I didnt have to carry it from the airport.
Also note depending on your circumstances for a one time relocate you dont have to pay VAT but presumably filling in the form means you get registered on the UK tax system again and start paying UK tax. That said I was never charged VAT on the desktop but it did arrive with a bent cover.
To all the security forces who were attracted here by the mention of semtex terrorists tax and post offices dont waste your time here go investigate a land banking company instead !
