Long weekend in BKK - 22nd to the 26th Sept - beers
Discussion
Hey
I will be arriving in BKK on the 22nd September from Vietnam (its my 40th Birthday treat) and was hoping that some peeps are around for beers..? I don't think I am safe on my own as I don't know the words to Like a Virgin so would be no good in a jail cell...
Otherwise what is there / where to go for a woman on her own at night as I don't want to sit in my hotel.
Thanks
Claire

Well the good news to start with, no Buddha days so all bars will be open (its an important thing for a pisshead to check up on ..... )
Loads of drinking & partying to be done in Bangkok too without going to a gogo bar (which TBH are only really Nana Plaza, Cowboy and Patpong as a rule)
SkyBar at Labua (from "The Hangover"), Lots of stuff down on riverside / chinatown, all sorts of stuff along Sukhumvit, plenty of night clubs, live music venues, markets ... you could even regress to smelly backpacker and go to Koh San Road (although i don't recommend it .... )
Sure a few of us here can point you in the right direction!

Ahh right in the middle of the shopping area!! lol
You will have no problems going into bars, other than maybe the occasional pissed Caucasian tt, and its most likely to be one of the resident Bangkok pistonheaders anyway !!
Check in closer to the date and if around, i am sure we can facilitate a pissup

I wouldn't write off the Khao San Road area. Go up to the top of it, cross Samsen Road and walk to the right a short while and you'll get to Soi Rambuttri (Not Thanon Rambuttri that runs parallel to Khao San). It's still a backpacker area, but miles more laid back and with quite a diverse crowd. Some funky little bars and restaurants there and would be fine by yourself. Madam Masur did a cracking Keang Hang Le too!
If you continue past Soi Rambuttri on Samsen Road, over the crossroad and just over the canal you'll get to Adhere the 13th Blues Bar. Live bands every night. Fantastic tiny place.
There are also quite a few bars on Phra Artit Road too, just behind Soi Rambuttri.
I wouldn't stay anywhere else when in Bangers, it's a great place.

I booked the Vie Hotel directly and got given an upgrade and free brekkie
I land in the evening of the 22nd and leave the late afternoon of the 26th, so anyone up for beers or something on any or all of the intervening nights (22nd / 23rd / 24th / 25th)
Save a girl from being on her own in a bar looking all saaaaad

Made it! Currently at the Vie hotel looking out at a very grey sky, never seen so much rain in years, need to buy one of them umberella thingys lol
So anyone about for drinks tomorrow or friday? Leave on saturday late afternoon so not going to be pulling an allnighter.
Any "must do's" for a complete BKK novice on her own?
Cheers

Did you have a good trip? Have a few beers?
I am currently looking at applying for some jobs in Thailand - I have holidayed there twice before and loved it - not been for 6 years though.
I work in construction as a site / project manager so I am fairly confident in finding something. Any advice would be great from the PH expats.

In reply to torqueofthedevil, I was Pm in Thailand, all be it 20 years ago, and my tip would be get a very good Pa who speaks good English. And for the first year under no circumstances are you to see the same girl twice.
.... as a PM here currently, i concur, although the English language is improving .... I would suggest that it will be much easier to get a role here if being transferred from UK rather than looking cold.
i am PM Airline Travel at the moment,
I would say that from what i can see / what i know there is very limited work for foreigners in Construction Management here, unless you are good at building railways / tunnels (look at Bombardier), but its not my industry so what i know is limited.

John I was with Bombardier, part of a team that opened their Thia office, they have a huge Thia workforce, in signalling it is now their largest office in the world, and from what I understand employee very few expats other than intergroup transfer. Now big bore tunneling subcontractors are different, but a lot are coming on the market as the new KL railway ends its tunnel phase
