Hi folks,

Myself and a mate are doing the Mongol Rally this year and are looking into continuing on to Japan after the finish, does anyone know of any car ferries from Russia to Japan running around the end of August and the rough cost?

Cheers,

Matt

Not sure about mainland direct, but i do know there are ferry routes from Sakhalin Island, and i have heard of one that goes from Vladivostok / Somewhere in Korea / Somewhere in Japan.

Not sure about getting a Mongol Rally shed past Ulan Bator and all the way to Vladivostok, at least make sure you are travelling with a Chiropractor !!

Cheers, I eventually came across something that said about the two routes you've mentioned and it looks like we are going to go via Sakhalin as it seems much easier and cheaper with a car.

We're cheating a little for the rally in using my old road rally 205 with fancy suspension, cage and other bits to help us on our way so we (hopefully!) stand a decent chance of making it. Once it comes back it'll be getting a strip down, new motor and back into road rallying (in theory). Chiropractor will definitely be needed though as we have fixed bucket seats and it ain't the smoothest ride in the world drivinggrumpyheadache

I know a few people who worked on the Sakhalin pipeline for Shell, i don't envy you driving there, I know more than one person who has been stranded due to breaking Toyota Hiluxs so be careful and good luck.

Ask AJS- About that, he is the PH Expert on breaking HiLux's hehe

Seriously though, over that part of the world, if you squint really hard, and use a bit of imagination to fill in the gaps, then yes, they may look like roads .......

Hi there,

Myself and my brother are actually doing a similar trip this year, but we're having trouble finding a straight answer as to whether we can get a car on a ferry from Vladivostok or Sakhalin over to Japan. So I must ask, was it cheap and easy to do from Sakhalin? and were there any problems transporting the vehicle with you?

Unfortunately we didn't made it to the ferry - the car ended up on its roof in Kyrgyzstan - I can't give you any more info than is already in this thread I'm afraid!
