RIP to Old Man Lee, an incredible man who "made" an incredible country.

I suspect that this will be the end of the PAP's political reign now, as the old heartlands voters who always went PAP in the belief that MM was still pulling some strings in the background will start looking at other party's

Wonder what this will do for the country now?

Indeed. A political giant. Didn't agree with all I experienced in our 3 years in Singapore but you can't argue with his legacy of turning the place into a superpower. Thoughts with our Sing friends as this guy had massive respect. Interesting times ahead. When's the next GE John ?

November this year i believe! Maybe close enough that sentiment will still be strong enough to keep Baby in.

Many of his policies would never work in a larger or more mature country, and a lot of the more "draconian" laws that remain (such as the graffiti and laws on public gathering) have their roots in the "fight against communism" but for a small, new city nation sometimes a different approach is needed i guess.

He did a fantastic job to pick up the reigns after Malaysia foolishly decided to cut the little red dot adrift

I went to see the funeral procession - in a monsoon!

The week of mourning / funeral etc was very well organised, lots of interesting old footage of him back in the 50s - 80s was aired.

To think that Malaysia , Nigeria and Singapore all got independence around the same time.

2 countries have massive natural resources, yet are complete basket cases / and corrupt .. what LKY has achieved is quite amazing really .. upt no.7 global GDP/ head in 30-40 years .. from quite a way down the pack in the 50s and early 60s, and now ahead of UK, US , Germany and Japan ?
