I'll be passing through Singapore in about a week from now and need to get a new tent which I was planning to buy online from the US and get delivered to an address in SG. Does anyone know if I can expect a hefty bill for import duty or will I be ok?

Thanks.

No GST for items under SG$400 (inc the delivery cost).

As John said, 7% GST above that.

I've sometimes ordered stuff (like race bike farings and exhausts) that came from the US and no GST was applied as the invoice wasn't on the box. Sometimes they are held by the ICA and just asked for a value when I collected them "oh about $450 mate" biggrin

The invoice for GST came separately and is payable by cheque only. I'm leaving SG tomorrow taking the tent with me so if both I and the goods are out of the country what then? I gather I can pay and claim back the tax but it's not obvious how to do this other than getting a form at Changi airport and once I leave SG it makes it much more difficult to claim.

I don't even have a chequebook never mind one in Singapore dollars. Will the person at the delivery address be liable for the debt?

I always paid postie in cash .... you should get a GST reciept and there is a GST refund kiosk at Changi Airport (after passport control) where you present and they will re-imburse (usually to a nominated credit card)

Importing car's into Singapore is going to be a very expensive affair and the end result will often end up matching local prices.

Check this guide out from LTA the official body governing this - http://www.lta.gov.sg/content/ltaweb/en/roads-and-...

Road tax will need to be calculated and paid as per CEVS - http://www.lta.gov.sg/content/ltaweb/en/roads-and-...

You will also need to purchase Certificate of Entitlement through the government auction for a right to drive the car on road and pay a premium of $10,000 to import it.
