We'll be hitting S,pore about 7am on the 10th July, with a 6 hour transit. I'd like to get out of the airport, with the wife and daughter, and go see something interesting. I lived there several times over the decades and it'd be nice to see a bit of the 'olde' Singapore while we have chance. Any recommendation for a nice stroll, within easy taxi access, or MRT?

Of course the wife would rather see shops, the daughter would rather eat food or sleep......

I went for three weeks with work and found there was not that much to do generally but a strole around the marina bay area is nice and there is opportunity to eat or shop.

MRT is easy and cheap and reliable so get that down to marina bay and go from there.

You can go to top of marina bay hotel or take the big ferris wheel. Or walk the f1 course.

Definately worth a visit in my experience.

We did the marina bay exploration last November, so the bus tour may be worth a punt, nice and easy. I wonder if they mind us jumping off if we find somewhere interesting?

We're back in the UK now, weather is traditional: cold, grey and windy...... frown

My problem is I refuse to fly Sing airways, they talk a good story on service, but they left the guy who had a heart attack just after leaving Sing suffer all the way to London, absolutly terrible, I will never fly with them again.

for something a bit different you could get a cab to changi village [next to the airport ]

and either :

1/ get a bum-boat over to Pulau Ubin which is the jungly island across the water [10 minute ride] - and go for a short bike ride / walk around the nature reserve.. there are trails for biking an hiking.. then go back and cab it to the airport.

2/ walk round the village for a look , maybe stop off at changi sailing club for a meal/ drink / chillout ?

..bit different to usual tourist stuff.

or 3/ shortish cab ride to East Coast Park ... and hang out at the beach. plenty of decent food - either seafood restaurants at one end , or hawker centre at the other

Changi village definitely appeals, as I worked there for two years back in the early nineties, in the yacht club mainly. Not too sure how much would be open in the village early morning, but the hawker centre would be a good start for some traditional breakfast and then a walk around the shops and maybe a stroll up to the yacht club. smile

Definitely a walk down memory lane for me.

Take a cab to the Singapore Flyer. Drop the daughter at the food court there, send the wife off to Marina Bay Sands Shopping Mall (with a lot of money) and you do this !

TBH either this or keep it local and go to changi village

Airfield cafe and dynamic dining are 24 hours, as are several other spots, ubin ferrys start at about 8am or just go for a wander around the boardwalk. There is a very nice restaurant at top,of Cranwell Road that, opens at 11am called The Costal Settlement for an early lunch then its a $10 taxi back to the airport.

We will have just climbed off a 13 hour flight from the UK, so something fairly tame might be somewhat more sensible than hooning around in a high power automobile. smile I do like Changi though, (many drunken memories) so I think that will be the plan.

an early morning walk around the boardwalk followed by some Prata and Kopi may be just what you want after 13 hours in a drainpipe!!!

Well, we totally ballsed that up! We decided to head for Orchard road, to buy some tat and let the wife have a look at the posh shops, but within 30 minutes both her and the daughter were about to collapse from the heat and humidity. After a couple of hours we called it a day and headed back to the airport. I have to admit, it has been a long day, hitting the road at 5am to get to Londonium, then a 12 hour flight on top.

I'm now sat in terminal 2, having a rest and drinking coffee. smile
