Race car build in Kuala Lumpur
Discussion
I live in HK and have/had a BMW e36 race car with e46 M3 running gear which I was going to be racing in Zhuhai this year in the Roadsport Challenge. However the weekend before last I put it into the wall. Hard.
Long and short of it is the car needs re-shelling. I have all the expensive bits which are mostly salvageable. Question is, what do I put them into? I have a full aftermarket ECU and ignition system, so no problem with electrics and running things.
It strikes me as sensible to put it all into another BMW and my initial thought is to go e30. However I don't really know the pros and cons of the different models with regard to what base chassis is best to start with (I will make another post on a BMW technical forum).
Being in Hong Kong, whilst I can get race mechanic work done here, it's not straight forward and not cheap. It strikes me that I could ship the stripped parts (or even whole damaged car) to KL, and get all the work done there a lot more cheaply than here. Also, I could then have a Malaysian car, which I could run at Sepang in the HKAA Historic series there. I need to learn more about their regs, but sounds good in theory to me, as Zhuhai costs a fortune relatively speaking and I think Sepang would be no more expensive for a higher quality experience.
What are people's thoughts? How easy would it be to get a good quality job done building my bits into a car over there? I see plenty of e30s for sale on the Malaysian used car sites. I would need to source one, strip it, fit a good quality cage and then swap all the bits across. Sounds straight forward enough... Anyone done it before there?

Will, do you know any of the people in the HKCC. Tom the scrutineer in HK can confirm the quality of work you can get done, I know some one who has a E30 with a E34 6cyl for sale at the moment in KL so it can be done
Quality of work look at Inter Formula, (Brian) or Niza Racing, (Niko) both have built cars for the series.
Inter Formula, built the E34 talked about in the 2103 motor sport resolutions thread below, and is currently building a 308 for the series.
Niko built my Sylva which has won class C twice, my daughters locost, and is currently building me a 1700 Caterham Super Sprint, he is also building a Lambo Contach replica for this years series.
Both are good builders and build for other series, these guys are engineers with a garage, not grease monies.
An E30 with a E36 engine would only be eligible for class C, (Non original engine), it would probably be 10 sec a lap of the pace of my Phoenix, looking at what E30 M3 do, better to build an E30 that is eligible for class B,
Classes are A 1700cc per 100KG, B 2700cc per 100kg, O over 2700cc per 1000kg, C non original engine. R Outline cars,
I would look at an E30 with a 328/528engine, they were raced by Alpine and I think could run in class B at around 1100kg .
You would need to strip the car outside Malaysia and ship in as parts to avoid duty, but I can put you in touch with the guy who got my car in for detailed advice or assistance.
All the bits can be bought here, e.g. I have an E30 M3 engine in my garage now in store for my mate who runs car 30 in the series, bought from the classifieds in a local paper and kept as a spare.
Any way I can assure you that quality work can be done in Malaysia.
To race in class b you need a block that was raced in period (before 1989) cranks head etc are free, so you could put your e36 crank, head on a E30 325 block and race, if they fit. Pm me and I'll send you the regs and contact emails in both KL and HK.

Hi Berw,
We exchanged a few emails a couple of years ago, before I brought my car from Dubai to HK.
I have full e46 m3 drive train, plus a spare set, so have a strong preference for staying with that. And I can run it in any shell as I have all the ecu, loom and drive by cable conversions kit already on it. This rebuild is intended as a pure shell swap and done cost effectively, so I don't really want to change engine.
I need to do some more digging on what she'll would be best.

So what happens if I am over 2,700cc per 1,000kg AND have a swap engine? Does that put me into class B or C? At 3,200cc, to avoid going to class B does that mean I need to stay above around 1,200kg?
Also, is there a internet forum for this race series? Where do I find other racers online?

If you use an engine that did not run on the chassis pre 89 then your in class c. If more than 2700cc taper 1000kg with an original engine then class O. Have a look at anyonecanrace and velocity motorsport on face book, the hccc site is not up to date.
Thanks. Also, I dropped you am email to your Petronas email address - that still the right one?Off to see my cars this weekend, looking forward to it, the Sylva has a new IRS sytem fitted, which should improve the handling, and I am awaitng delivery of the body and seat fro the Caterham.
There is a track day on the 7th April at Sepang and a few of us are taking cars up for a pre season run (track day is not ideal but it is a saturday so no need to loose work) if you fance seeing a few cars and meeting the builders in KL.
There are a few decent cars on Mudah at the moment that you could build on the Opel Genie isone, and there is a series 4 sunbeam shell for 11KRm, which you could put a ford V8 in and race in class o. The toyota strlet for 25K is a good car, came second to mky car last year, it was bult by a father for his sone, and the son has moved on to formula BMW so it is a genuine sale.

its like triggers broom! A pal of mine here runs an E36 compact with and E46 M3 lump in race car guise. Great car but doesn't really fit into any like car categories. Wonderful car though.
Of course its like Trigger's Broom, see the name in photo below, original donor car was a Lotus Sunbeam, but only bit left is the chassie plate,
The Pink car is for sale if any one interested, fully prepared Locost 7, 1300 cross Flow, Twin 40's Plumbed in Fire Ex, Certified Roll Cage, etc ready to race, I also have a 1 also have a 1600 block and crank, Big Valve hemi cross flow head, with Lotus flat topped pistons and Rods to build a 1680Cc screamer for sale separately.

Assume Novi isnt racing anymore or has she moved up?!The Pink car is for sale if any one interested, fully prepared Locost 7, 1300 cross Flow, Twin 40's Plumbed in Fire Ex, Certified Roll Cage, etc ready to race, I also have a 1 also have a 1600 block and crank, Big Valve hemi cross flow head, with Lotus flat topped pistons and Rods to build a 1680Cc screamer for sale separately.
I caqn just see Nick wedged into that... pfff hahahah!
No, Novi's racing I've bought here 1700 Caterham Super Sprint, we are building it now, engine is in the pink car while we are building, so she csn use somthing now. spec on the new car is Caterham Chassie, 1700 super Sprint Engine, Streight Cut gear Box, Hispec Ally uprights with 4 Pot calipers, R500 Wheels, Caterham Wide Track Suspension, Carbon Fiber Body panels, Carbon fiber R500 seat, fiber glass wind deflector 9willl be copied in carbon. All the abouve bought and on way. we will then sort out with all the things we can do local, like alloy fuel tank in the seat well, plumed in fire, swirl tanks, cage, rear disk conversion to the Ital axil, very light body, we are planning to use thinner alloy then caterham use as it is not a road car etc.
I also have the red top fuel pumps, regulator, FIA cut out switch rain lights etc, all ready to go.
I am then planning to put a 1650 cross flow in the pink cr, I have all the bits, hemi big valve head, couple of M711 escort blocks and I am looking for a Datsun 1800 stell crank to modify, and will run the Pink car as a spare.
saw the Sylva today it is all together with IRS rear, and is off to the rolling road tonight ready fro teting sunday, will then need a respray as the body is awfull, as it is now camshell both ends, fuel tank relocted etc.
Niko is trying to finsh my car so he can get my Mates Lambo ready for first race, then all the bits for Novi's car will be in one place and we can put it together.

No more excuses here's the car to form the basis of a good race car, at 1800 cc it could run in the Asia Classic Car Challange in class A at about 11OOKG, againts the Alfas and the Minis it would be competative, and the Class A mini won the overall championship last year.
Big brake of an EVO with suspension upgrades and could be very competitive for agood price.
