KL in the New Year
Discussion
Hi all KL locals,
I will be starting to move to KL (from Aberdeen) in January.
Starting on a rotation, aiming to pack up and go full time as a family this time next year.
Arriving on the flight from Amsterdam afternoon of Saturday January 5th for the rest of the month.
Always up for a beer. Hope to see you soon.
XJSJohn: John, not ignoring you on this but you know all about it!
Regards, Mark

And get a good relocation deal so you can add loads of bits for my new caterham into you house move,

KL can be a massive pain in the backside as far as traffic and commuting is concerned, so choose your location wisely.
Main issue for us was that SWMBO didn't (still doesn't...) want to drive here, so we had to find somewhere that has shops, etc., within walking distance of the apartment. However, I'm lucky in that I don't work right in the city, so I have a relatively pain-free commute each day.
Plenty of people around to provide info and 'how to' type stuff (especially berw, who has the patience of a saint !).
International schools (think of them as businesses that trade in educational services and you'll get the right idea about them - they are definitely 'for profit' organisations....) are mostly pretty good here, but budget an extra 10% per annum for 'extras'. Also, have heard reports of some of them being harder to get kids into recently, due to being over-subscribed (although they don't tell you that until you've handed over your non-refundable 'assessment' fee...). Our daughter goes to Garden Int'l in Mont Kiara, which istoo's kids also attended, and I'd say it's ahead of many UK state schools in terms of standards (its results would, I think, still put it in the top 5% of UK schools).
For me, I'm not overly enamoured with KL as a city - it's noisy, the traffic is pretty crap, and it's seemingly obsessed with shopping malls. But then, I live out in the countryside back in the UK, so *any* city would be a bit of a culture shock.
On the plus side, the food is GREAT and there is no shortage of places to eat. It's also quite nice going to buy stuff in proper shops - a visit to get bits for my aging BMW is like a trip back in time, where I have to set aside 1/2 an hour for a chat with the shop owner, for his runner to go and get the bits, or to chat with other customers. It's as much a social thing as a place to get parts.

I am long long overdue a catch up with you both. Hope your both doing good. Nick, hows the 323.. Berw, what have you bought since i left! And how much more of the sylva has broken (or still left), hello to the respective wives and kids!!!
Still misds the weather, food, car freaks and biking in the jungle... actually i miss the freestyle driving, knockhill seems boring and unexciting compared to the average KL commute!

Hi Istoo, Sorry I've been meaning to email you, since you left I've bought a 3L Hilux and a myvi extreme, she put the 944 into a wall at here mates condo so she is banned from that and i got here the Myvi, the 1500 sport one nice car.
Afer waht happend to the BM's I had the 944 insured on a classic policy yhey pay out well on an agreed value, so far (prior to me banning her) she had two claims.
I've also bought a caterham 1700 super sprint, engine has done 4 hours and it comes with a new chassie, also got the streight cut box, axil shockers carbs distributer, all for 2500 pound, I've ordered a new body kit and seat in carbon from my Chinese mate who has the molds and the plan is for the daughter to race it this year.
The Locost is have a 4age fitted in place of the cross flow and will be available to hire for races.
The Syvla is blowing axils, it won its class this year again, DNF in 4 races,2 because of gear box and 2 with diff, won the 7 dry races nd 2nd in the we race. Currently fitting a new rear end with a Nissan 3.7 LSD and IRS. Ran the last race with the caterham axil which is 3.7 in place of the atles which was 3.9 car was faster as I was not on the rev limit throught 3 and 10, so going 3.7.

And I've been an anti-social git over the past few months ! (Just been flat-out busy with work, but things are *slowly* improving as we've managed to find a couple of decent people to take over when I'm gone).
Not helped by not having been able to get down to Sepang as much as I would have wanted last year. Planning to make more of an effort this year though.
BMW has mostly been behaving (there, that's cursed it...) and I'll be looking to move that on in a couple of months or so. Still having fun tinkering with it and improving it though, which keeps me out of mischief. Got a few jobs lined up for this weekend as well.
SWMBO and Erin are looking forward to heading home to the UK this year - I'm less sure about that bit... I'm OK with leaving KL, but not so sure about returning to the UK and commuting by train every day... Yuck...
