Family friendly Singapore GP - your recommendations?
Discussion
Hi,
Looking into bringing my 2 boys (7 & 4) over for the F1. Not been to Singapore before but would like somewhere to stay that's 'affordable' (+/- £100GBP) per night and not too far away from the action.
Is there an option to stay slightly further out and commute in on public transport?
Will probably be fetching the wife along too, so if the hotel has a pool etc. she'll be happy. Shopping opportunities would would also be necessary if she was to tolerate me brainwashing the kids even further.
I'm guessing all the accommodation in my bracket that's even slightly nearby is fully booked by now, so what/where would you recommend?

S$200 / night for a decent hotel room in the town centre is almost unheard of. Usual price for a business class hotel is around $250 - $320++ - that would be for a double room.
Were you aiming for $200 / night for 4 people ?!
Even cut-price places like IBIS charge $200+ [even outside of the GP peak ].. and the rooms are just big enough to walk round a double bed.
I know a lot of the town centre hotels - but not for $200/ night for the GP.
I think you will have to be some way out of the town centre , and not that close to the MRT [tube] to get better priced accomodation.
Some of the others on here may be more familiar with what is available away from the centre.

My daughter went to Sing the other week with 2 friends, we got a hotel 5min wolk from Orchard road for 3 people, for less than 300Rm (150S$), breakfast was available as an etra, I'll try to look up the name when I am home the weekend, but we were very happy with it, OK not business class, but I don't like business class, they are full of business people, I see enought of them when in work.

Any other 'must see' activities for a young family in the area?
a few things for families :Sentosa: good for a full-day family outing [beaches , Universal studios / rides , shops , food ... ] - and you can get the cable car back to Harbourfront MRT.
Zoo night safari
boat trip around marina bay , sing. river
singapore flyer [wheel]
walk round china town
east coast park [beach and open air hawker centre]
museums and cinemas
You have to realise that for F1 weekend the hotels increase their prices by a minimum of 200-300% over that weekend to catch people just like yourself and me. I have been twice to F1 weekend now and last year i stayed in the Aqueen hotel (I would class as 3 star) in Balestier Road and that was a single bedded room, it worked out at nearly S$550 for three nights, no breakfast. The room was miniscule with a toilet which doubled as a shower with the bog paper getting wet, not good but it was somewhere to sleep.

This, hotel prices go through the roof for F1 week unfortunately!Having said that, if you plan on doing some exploring too, then look at staying away from central. The public transport system here is very good and cheap, although often if there are 4 of you travelling and it is not a peak / surcharge period then a Taxi can be the same price!
There are hotels out on East Coast that may be more affordable, also with some hunting around there are lots of provate "boutique" hotels (not what Alfaman is referring to) in Joo Chiat and Chinatown
DO not stay in a hotel 81.
edit just got an email in from agoda, a few to look at
Oasis Hotel, Novena
Wink hotel, Chinatown
M Hotel, CHinatown
Just Inn, Upper Paya Lebar
Perak Hotel, Little India
Victoria Hotel, Bugis

The place my daughter stade at was the Orchird Parade Hotel, they had a room for 3 girls from her class on their first trip away alone, for around 250 Rm a night no breakfast, they said it was centrel and OK. The hotel was very friendly, when I spoke to them, I paid the room bill in advance, and then agreed that the girls could book certain things to the room, food, no alchol, breakfast etc and I paid with my card when they booked out over the phone.

Its a few doors down from the Ibis. We stayed at the Ibis, but I jotted down the name of this hotel for future reference
