The company I work for is close to winning a contract in Manila which could result in me flying to Manila a few times over the next year. Obviously I want to travel business class so I'm researching the cheapest way to achieve this so I can present my case to the company. Googling hasn't brought up any direct flights with carriers going via regional hubs like HK, Singapore, Dubai or Amsterdam.

Does anyone have any tips to offer for which routes might be better than others?

Just looked on Sky Scanner

MAS via KL
Cathay via HK
Qatar via DOH
Emirates via DXB
KLM via AMS

Seems that you cannot do that route all the way on SQ. All of the above carriers have good Business Class seats so i would be looking at the travel time, seems to vary between 15 hours and 30 hours!! Via HK looks like the fastest route!

My experience is that cheapest is Doha or Dubei, at least to KL, but I never take them and pay the sirect price, as the stop over is hopeless,

Thanks for that. I was rather taken aback by the flight durations as most of them are around 20 hours & I find 12-13 hours to Singapore bad enough. I would prefer to break the trip in Singapore for a day or so but I can't see that going down too well. I think KLM via AMS might be the one to look at.

When I worked in Europe and travelled too the far east, I worked for two companies that allowed you to leave on Friday night, so you arived saturday evening, then you had Sunday free as a tourist, the company didn't get you jet lagged and you got a tourist day, worked OK

True, & I do that when flying to Singapore but going onto Manila could easily add another half day depending on connections. I didn't realise it was quite so different to flying to HK, Singapore etc.

The reason there's no direct flights is down to the airports grading. There's 2 airports here in Manila, with the Philippine airlines airport being the far far better of the two.

I've lived just outside of Manila now since November after moving from Bangkok.

After over 20 years with KLM I have just switched to Emirates and would highly recommend using them, especially in business class with free chauffeur drive and upstairs on the 380 is something else.

the double decker does seem to be having a few "issues" was on one back to UK in October and noticed same ...

and no more passenger flights on SQ 747's any more ... its either 777 or 380 for long haul, Jumbo only for Cargo
