Moving out to Brunei in a few weeks. Anybody got any useful tips on car purchase procedure and decent used dealers. Rough idea of insurance costs would be useful too.

Thanks in advance.

Good luck, I hate Brunie, buy somthing cheap there is only one road, get somthibng that can get to Miri in Sarawal every weeknd and you will be OK, I know a few people there who have bought cars from Singapoe when the COf ends, John will know about that, as there is no drink, available (in theory) there are no drink drive laws, you see lots of people who drive in a state that I wouldn't try to walk home in.
I don't think there is any one on here from Brunie, some one lives in KK Sabah, and I spend a lot of time in Bintulu Sarawak I thibk we are theo only one's on Borneo

Thanks, I'll be living in Seria(?), will probably go for a smallish 4x4 (5dr RAV4, CRV, XTrail etc.)

How easy is it to bring cars in from Singapore? I've done a quick search and established that Brunei cars are quite expensive in comparison to the UK.

Does anybody know a rough price for importing a car from the UK? Is there an import tax on used vehicles?

OK so we all know who you work with. Sira is in the South of Brunie, and it ia about 10 minutes to the LNG complex, Head office is in the town,I worked there 10 years ago, I hope you work for the oil company, itself then you get access to the club house with pool and golf course, if you work for a contractor there is nothing to do as you can not get club membership, most people go to Miri at the weekend 1 hour drive now as the bridges are open. To give you an idea of why I hate Brunie when I was there (10 years ago) the bridge was built but you could only use it if you where a member of the royal family everyone else used the ferry.
Are you taking your family? middle and high school was not good when I was there, try to get a newer house many of the old company houses are a bit run down.
Forget a car from the UK, loads have tried and failed, cars are very expensive, you will not be able to get a Sing car in, but the dealer can and these tend to be cheaper than car registered new as Brunien cars.
In Siria there is the tepot pub, where they serve beer in tepot so 'no one knows' May Fangs who serve beer upstairs, and there is a steak house that was awfull, there is the riverside hotel, and they built a new hotel about 10 years ago that was OK, can't rmber the name now, and the British Army Officers Club is good if you get on the invite list, there is no official beer, you can bring in 6 bottles, (and a bottle can be any size) import this properly and keep the paper work then if you have an illegal beer the paper work covers it, (try proving which 6 cans you brought in).
There is no drink and drive laws, and as there is no beer the police do not prosecute you even if found drunk in a car, and loads of people drive drunk, there was a guy killed two people drunk and the police did not prosecute he was bailed and left the country never to return before the case came up.
Bikes where cheap, Loads of the Dutch use bycicles.
Do not upset a Brunien in work they will pull your work permit, and people who upset the big emplyer get their next posting to Nigeria.
I worked in Brunie suconded from a major oil compnay that where a partner so the Bruniian's could not intimidate me as I was empoyed overseas, and they hated me. I am now to old to get a work permit in Brunie and I am happy that I wil never have to go there again.
There is no problem drinking in Brunie, places are not raided, but if you ae stopped by the police and the smell beer you may find that a phone call is made and you are sacked.
Brunie is most racist place I have ever been, and there is little mixing between the various communities, Brunian, Brunian Chinese, Dutch an British.
OK go ther enjoy yourself and prove me wrong.

As stated Miri is your escape!! (or fly in / fly out)

Lots of car dealers in Singa that specialize in buying cars for export (singa is the second largest exporter of used cars in the word, after Japan!), i can have a poke about and see who they send them to in Brunei, but it is a bloody pain in the arse to export a car from Sg unless you are a registered exporter (its tied to the old boys network)

Best of luck with the Clogs!

Thanks John, will probably end up buying through a dealer over in Brunei but will look at private sales also. Cars are ridiculously expensive over there for what they are but hopefully the total 'cost of ownership' will be lower in comparison to the UK due to reduced mileage covered and cheaper fuel.

Did a bit of poking about the other day, and most exporters here sell direct to dealer networks in Brunei, most likely chinese dealers will be handling Singapore cars.

Not sure if it is the same system there as here, but do some investigating, in Singapore you get tax back etc when you sell the car on to export again .. anyway makes your eyes water here, 2010 VW Sirocco 1,4TS for GBP65k
