buying and driving a car in HK
Discussion
I've been living in Hong Kong for a year now and I love it but I do miss some driving
I have the opportunity to have a parking spot near where I live (kowloon side) so I have been thinking about buying a car. Would that be a stupid idea ? public transports are great and relatively cheap, but I'd love to do some week-end driving.
So how much money is that going to cost me (insurance, taxes, etc...) and is it really worth it ? any nice routes around HK ? I know I cannot drive to China, not even Shenzhen or Guandhong, so it would have to be HK only.
I don't need anything fency, a small car would be cool enough. Can I drive with my swiss license or what do I need to do with it ?!
Any expat HK drivers here ?
Thanks!

Hi,
I have been living and driving in HK for 6 years. You can get a decent car for 40 to 50,000HK$, best place is asisa expat classifieds, buy from an expat leaving, usually some good deals.
Last summer I bought a 2001 Merc ML320 with 70,000kms in great condition for 45,000$, insurance is 1,000$ per year. The only other expense is the license (similar to road tax, this will vary on engine size but around 5 to 10,000$ per year.
Great driving roads near Sai kung and stanley.

Currently in a similar position to you. Been here nearly 2 years and desperate to get back behind the wheel. I live on Hong Kong Island and parking has been the major hurdle so far ($3100 a month is a bit steep for a recreational vehicle). Be interested to see how you get on Marco, keep us posted.
