Looking for a 964 in Hong Kong

After 2 years without I have broken and am looking for a 964 or something as fun for the HK weekends.

has anyone had any dealings with them? does anyone know of a good 964 (ideally C4 coupe)?

Also, can I use my UK NCD here? does anyone know how insurance works in HK?

I cant offer any help on the questions you asked, but am generally interested in your predicament due to the fact I have recently bought a 964 C2 and have taken a job in Hong Kong due to start towards the end of next year!

Is the one in their showroom seriously on par with price to the 993? I appreciate its far from Germany but bloody hell... £35k for a non turbo?!

I guess its the price you have to pay but it makes me think about importing mine!

You'll need someone that can read Chinese Google Translate works a bit, a stick wave one is probably best as the porsche auto's of that vintage weere a bit rubbish.

Classic Convertibles in Peel Street will probably do a pre-sale inspection they specialise in Merc, BMW and Porsche. Never spoken to them mind so its not a recommendation but rather some guidance.

Yeh I know what you mean, I sold my TVR in the UK for what I thought was a good price at, here the only Sagaris they have for sale is $1.4 Million HKD, thats 100k plus!! crazy. I guess the only thing to bare in mind that it is all proportional, you pay more but you also sell for more therefore residual loss is still the same.

I'll keep you posted, I'm off to see some on the weekend, but I think the biggest issue will be finding a manual one.

Thank Lee, I knew one of the sites but the other is a great help. My colleagues have helped me out, but it seems porsche is universal

I know the garage you mean, they are on the hill by rednaxela terrace. When I source something they would be my nearest european car service place so it may be well touching base early, thanks for the that.

So how did you get on mate? I always wanted a manual one, then mine came up forsale its a tiptronic. I went to test drive it and it totally converted me, soooooo easy to have fun in it at the weekends!

I am planning to dry store mine back in UK but I have no idea how long I will stay in HK for. On a slightly different subject, I hear the housing market is at its top end at the mo in HK, are the rumours the same there that it is due to crash soon?

There are slim pickings out here and the cars are mostly Auto which I am less interested in. The search goes on but I am considering getting one in the UK and storing it on the off chance of a future return.

As for the property market, I'm no expert but it certainly seems to be slowing down at its peak ... lots of rumours being put around about a slump next year but its hard to tell as it seems most investors here are from Mainland China and the apetite there seems to be growing. The prices currently are so unrealistic that something has to give I guess IMO.

I'm surprised at the comments about the 911 steptronic being good, borrowed one the other day, 2 laps and the brakes where finished, which was handy because 3 laps and the engine was turning on all lights, oil over heating, I thought it was one of the worst cars I'd ever driven, and it was expat owned car in great condition. actually drove it as I was thinking of replacing the 944 with one not going to borther,

That's a shame about the 964 you drove, they all look pretty, but the engines need such attention to keep them running sweet. I'm sure the fact it was steptronic had nothing to do with it! The brakes however...as with all autos, no engine braking = faster brake wear, but that also depended on state of the brakes in the first place!

I obviously biased as I love mine to bits!

Yes maybe I didn't pick the best test, a mate brought one to Sepang, and as I was thinking about changing my wifes 944 for a 964, I did afew laps in it, of course, then of course in my ,ind, it gets matched against my race cars, and it was awfull, I'm sure it would make a good road car, but I was surpriised haw 'fragile' the engine was. The thing with the 944 is it just keeps going, simple unstressed engine, the 964 was just turning lights on, I'm told that the oil light did not count as it is dry sump and the light simply means the tank level is low, but its off putting having the oil light flasshing, looks like a big illuminated $ sign on the dash.

I just finished a six month search for a non GT3 Porsche with a manual transmission. Saw quite a few on mymotors' website and inquired several times. Very slow on the response to email, calls etc. here I am with cash ad I contact them but they never materialize. I think most are on consignment so they don't actually own or sometimes have the car there. also I saw the same cars advertised elsewhere by other parties.

Ended up buying a 911-993 Turbo I saw their website and inquired. Also inquired from another dealer. They both started calling me back when the owner came back from holiday. Big surprise, I bought it from the dealer who was more responsive and helpful.

Now, just looking for places to drive this beauty!

Mymotors, like many of the dealers, advertise as many cars as they can get pictures of in HK, whether they are for sale or not. Car comes in for a service? iPhone, snap shot, put it up for sale and make it look like you have great options for buyers. If they have a genuinely interested buyer, they will contact the owner (very easy to do here) and see if they will sell.

Be very careful with the dealers here, many are shady as sin and will say whatever they can to get you to place a deposit. It's worth keeping an eye open on the expat forums as lots of people leaving/trading to a family/new car stick their cars on there.
