Got chatting with a local Chinese taxi driver yesterday.
The conversation started about how cool, inside his car was, as it was about 35 deg, outside.
Then some how, the conversation got onto "how long can your car be a taxi for?"
Most are ownre drivers.
Each city has its own prefernce of type, model, and colour scheme.
Most are Hyundai Elantras, all running on LPG.

Any way, back to my conversation, the taxi has to come off the road when it is 8 years old.
Regardless of miles or condition.
Even though it needs MOT every year, it is still scrapped and crushed.
The owner gets 600 rnb, which is about £60.00
So then I asked him, what about all the personal, private cars in Weifang, where I live?
For the record, there are more Land Cruisers, Audid's BMW's, Porche's than you can shake a stick at.
He was telling me the oldest your private car can be, regardless of condition, miles, etc, is 14 years.

This I now begin to understand that is similar to the "Scrappage Scheme" in UK, but this is an enforced scrappage.

This I guess is why there are so many new cars here in Weifang, and I presume, over most of China.
Also adds to the fact, that there are more new cars sold in China, than any other country in the world.

..thought this was about one's own life expectancy if travelling by taxi in China.

Judging on my recent trips to Shanghai , and the local dodgem-style driving ...rather limited biggrin
