Obviously something is dodgy but I can't work out what? Is it simply that the COE has expired? If something seems to good to be true and all that.....
Didn't see what the price of it is, but if around 10 years old then they are being "scrapped to export" out of Singapore as the COE is so bloody high at the moment, They will get very little by way of rebate at that age, so asking price in Singapore seems to be around 40k upwards, so that converts to about RM100k, plus local taxes. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1562673247296599?_...

(have a look on SGCarmart.com) if its alot lower than that then there is something dodgy.
Thought it looked dodgy but I didn't realise it was a Singapore car, to get it into Malaysia you would need a Approval Permit, these are not easy to get, (I got one 15 years ago for my Sylva) and then pay the duty.
My wife is looking at a Z4 to replace her Z3, starting price is around 80K Rm. She'd sell the Z3 with 55K KM on it for around 55 KRm.
My experience was that to get the Ap without paying 'coffee money" took around 18 months,

listen to berw!
He helped me out no end, prior and during, our stay there as well.
I ended up with an M535i, which was lovely, classic mini's really appealed to me. I would suggest big old and fast. Anything new is biblical money. For trundling a Myvi is perfect. We always had a few rental Myvis and they were great. As Nick aptly described once, its 'freestyle' driving...
Top bloke, even although he cheated to get the fastest car in his class
ps berw, pinged an email to you the other week, got a few contacts sourced out re re last contact. .

Camry is a 3 liter right? There is a huge difference between a 3.5 and a 3, so check before you buy, when we meet I'll tell you about the tax on my Lotus Carlton here 3,615cc.
Carlton is OK next year as it will be eligible for 75% reduction, my old 635M was also reduced for age so I'm not sure what the full 3.5 is but around 500 pound more than a 3 liter.
That part of the issue with big cars, people who may buy a big old jag in the UK in place of say a new Proton, can't afford the tax here so they buy a new Proton on finance, making the old Jag type thing hard to sell.
I would just say there is very little of the knowledge/experience of buying selling second hand cars in the UK the that is transferable to Malaysia.

One lovely thing about driving in Malaysia are the notional speed limits. On an open road you can basically drive how you like and regard the £50 fine as a trackday fee. Came home yesterday after a month of driving in Melbourne and while it's a little bit Wild West out here, I love being able to drive to the conditions and not an arbitrary line on the speedometer.

50 pound fine!? You're not playing the game properly! A local chap who works for me can make them 'disappear' for much less than that. tom5678 said:

If so it is very easy and she could get 20 Pound down (99Rm down and 8 years). OK we assume you have more sense than that. Banks will talk to you and tend to be more individual than I understand is the case in the UK, there is no central credit agency.
They will want, Passport with a work permit, proof that you have an address, such as a lease agreement, utility bill and income (contract year end tax form, or pay slips depends what you have).
I've bought two new cars on finance (a Myvi and a Toyota) financed them through my bank with 50% down, paid off early no penalty.
I'd suggest that you first open a local bank account. I closed all my HSBC accounts world wide because I ahd such bad service from HSBS here. Internationally the is Std C, HSCB City Bank, none of them ahve wide spread branch net work and my employer had trouble making salary payment, but Std C is very good if you want a mortgage, so maybe have an account with one of these.
Get a local bank for local use, and they will fiance a car, I like Public Bank, vet personal service I'm sure they'd loke at 30% no problem, Othere are MBank and CIMB, i found CIMB very good until they took over Southern Bank a few years ago and ten they were two big and couldn't give the service I wanted.
You will find that for new car the dealer will ask who you bank with, and then arrange finance with your bank, he will know who to talk to. generally not as formal as the UK you will have to satisfy your manger you can pay back and he will be flexible on what he demands.
Are you aware of the insurance situation here/ again very flexible and there are lots of people who hire out 'private' cars they can not pay the finance on for a month or two, its not dodgy and is the way to go for the first few months.

Berw, thanks... informative as usual!
I won't have any payslips until I start work but do have my visa currently. My wife is Malaysian but she won't be working - do they count my wage as joint income so it's easier to get the finance in her name?
Regarding the flexibility of people who can't pay the monthly bill - are these advertised or just a case of knowing someone?

With a Malaysian wife you will have no problem. Things are different here from what I understand the UK to be.
There is no link between the manufacturer and the distributor (except Proton and Peradua), distributor is the political appointee who can get a business license. So there is no dealer finance or leasing type thing, it is done by banks.
As a Malaysian your wife would get nothing down finance no problem. Open a bank account, and get your first salary paid into it direct, get a tax reference and I'm sure you can get a decent finance deal.
For 100K look at a pick up, I've got a 3 liter Hilux with a top on the back, fantastic car top of the a range all extras was 108.
If you phone the hire guys in the newspaper classified you can get a good hire deal, but it appears dodgy to foreigners. What happens here is insurance is scheduler, so all they look at is engine size and value and they quote, so any driver insurance is no more than named. (My son as a named on my 1000cc Kawa was an extra pound when he was 17, imagine getting a quote in the UK).
So I can get my 17 year old daughter named on the Porsche with a learners licence for almost nothing. People there fore take out all driver insurance and hire their cars out when they have financial problem, (its legal and you will get no problems doing this), through the classified, but when the car comes it is obviously not Avis, you will find things like tissue boxes etc and its obviously private, just go for it and don't be concerned.
That's what I did when I first came here.
As I say finance is not as regulated as in the UK, much more like wha tthe UK was like when I was young, talk to your bank manager and he will be flexible there is no strict list of documents or pass or fail on a point system.
I bank with Public bank, when I bought the Toyota the loan was through public bank head office, (near to dealer) my Peradua was through Jalan Pudu branch, (near to dealer) nearer is my Branch, they just phoned up and spoke to my branch manger. Want to by my 944?
.
are you KL based or going up Ipoh way?.

The OH wants a Toyota Innova which is around 100k so we will be going looking at that when we fly over in August (We have one 4 year old and twins on the way - with the maid we need 7 seats apparently )
As much as I'd love the 944 I doubt I'd get away with it for now, was looking at a new Slyphy as they look nice and a decent price, I dont want to go too crazy on the cars for first few years as its still essentially the honeymoon period
I'll have a look out for the classifieds with the private hiring, sounds like an excellent idea to tide me over for a while
My office is in Sentral and we will be staying in Kuchai Lama for the first few months as we got a good deal on a condo (1800sqft 4+4 for 2250RM furnished)
