how about a rotary
Discussion
I know this will get me thrown under the bus but has anyone thought of doing a 3 rotor wankel motor? I know that they make 500 HP with a turbo the package would be small I think it would be light and it would rev to the moon. The 3 rotoe is suppose to have a very nice exhaust note to it as opposed to the 2 rotor. The one big down side I see is they like fuel. Any thoughts. Lee
A few people have talked about it, but nobody's done it.... however someone's in the process of doing one in an SLC

As some may know I came very close to getting the rotary in my track car. (took the wimpy girls route and got the LS 7 instead). Ideally I wanted the 4 rotor n/a, but firstly it's very long and secondly it would appear almost impossible to silence properly.
Talking it over with Carl Hayward the best solution was a 3 rotor single turbo. Nice easy 600hp with almost instantaneous response. The turbo obviously calms the noise down. 800hp available with more frequent engine refreshes.
These high output rotaries are in fact entirely bespoke motors with no Mazda components. Such is Carls confidence in his engineering that he gives an amazing warrenty on trackday engines not just with the road engines!
No problems fitting to Porsche turbo gearbox or NLT.
Price for a bespoke rotary is the same as LS 7.

It was AS "500bhp" carb engine with road tyres. It wasn't clutch slip. And yes on dry roads. Admitedly on a hot day with the sun on the road and hot tyres it would only spin the wheels up to 3rd.
Perhaps the new owner would give a second opinion as to wheelspin and the AS engine!!!

haha yes I can vouch for this comment Frank! Found that out to my near demise on the Caterham bypass in 4th gear lighting up the tyres.....Perhaps the new owner would give a second opinion as to wheelspin and the AS engine!!!

Alot is said about AS and as a new owner i cannot really comment - but tbh whether this engine is producing what AS say it is (rated around 540 bhp - according to AS) - i really don't care because its MORE than enough on the road.....!!!

will do a dyno at some point. From what ive been told - people say a "540" AS engine is actually around the 450 bhp mark. Should be interesting but either way - im happy. Stonking car that so far is untouched on the road (F430 scuderia included which was dispatched in said incident on the Cat Bypass)
