A little more detail please ie which lights at the front are not working.

First thought is the light switch as it is unlikely both fuse 7 & 8 have failed so that takes you back to the switch. Cars that don't get used much can suffer with bad contacts in the switch so first check would be to throw the light switch a dozen or more times to help clean the contacts inside and see if that cures it.

only instruments and rear side lights and number plate lights have gone.....
all front lights including flash is ok.. indicators and brake lights ok also..

tried switch...... must be a joint between fuse box and dash which the wiring continues to the rear of the car??

The switch must have power to it or the headlights would not work.
There is a red wire from the switch to both fuses 7 & 8 (7 is LH + instruments)(8 is RH + number plate) I can't think both these fuses have blown so check to see if you have 12V at these fuses with the lights switched on.
