I used to run a Hewland DGC in my previous Ultima project. Straight cut gears, standard 5 speed H pattern, no syncro. Rock solid peice of engineering.

As for the NLT in the advert. Fantanstic gearbox - at that price you may as well buy brand new new from Hewland, possible even get it cheaper. I am looking for one myself at present I have seen these before at under £10K

I've got an NTL with a ShiftTec paddle shift system installed in my GTR.

It's work very nice, once set up properly, but it is a full blown racing gearbox (a real kit in the backside on shifts biggrin) and therefore much more suited to the track.

The thing to be carful of is that the standard NTL only has a torque limit of 500 ft lbs which is not alot with one of these big V8's. I've contacted Hewland and they do a upgade kit to bring the limit up to around 600 ft lbs but it £10,000!! With that in mind if you really want one I'd buy the box directly from Hewland at the uprated spec as it's bound to cheaper than upgrading.

Excellent comments which confirm my first impresssions. Will have to be a syncro gear box IMO for general use (track days and street). Where are you in CH???

Hi,
i know a guy who has a NLT box in a stelth.
The box is good for 500 HP, not more!
He has put 700 V8-HP on the box and the box turned to many small pieces after some laps on the track.

The only boxes who are good for +600 HP are the holinger sequentials.
but they are really expensive!

nice day,
Gottfried

i think it is more important to focus on what ultima is offering which is more a road car than a race car for competition. If you are using an ultima for a conversion into a race car then expect the same problems and high expenses as with any other race car project.
I have a standard G50/03 box with my 580hp LS7 and I intend to drive it a lot next year and I will drive it as hard as possible on the road, because that is what I have built it for. We will then know if this combination is reliable. In terms of torque I think the LS7 is no big difference to the many cars that use AS engines and we do not have many reports about broken porsche gear boxes. Actually I do not know of any since I am reading here.
The reason why this is probably working so well on road used car is that with road tyres you can hardly load the gear box enough because your wheels will spin before reaching the crititcal stage. I would say the hardest test for the gear box and complete drive train are dyno sessions.

you 100% correct.
we only had some problem with customers, ls7 and G50 box when they were going to the racetrack.
there you have a better grip, incase of rubber and the the gearbox is history!
