quick release steering wheel

Im sure this has been talked about before, but looking at fitting a removable steering wheel. Please guys is there any good ones and bad ones???

which type of quick release type of mechanism do you use??.

so many on ebay and so different..

i want to get the steering wheel closer to me as im 6 foot and seat as far back as possible also i want to fit ford stalks over winter so need wheel away from the dash and i cant get under the dash with wheel on so it would be handy for some work i want to do....

why have you had a bad experiance???

putting a ford stalk requires 40 mm of extending of the steering column.
check my build site, there is a few pics how to do this using a simple pipe clamp.

Not me but it is not unknown for the wheel to have not been clicked home and come away in use. This was reported only recently in, I believe, the Kitcar forum with the resultant write-off of the car. Also seen an in-car vid of it happening to a race driver. Best bit of that was that he didn't lift just hurriedly clipped it back on.

Unless you really need to remove the wheel often I would machine up the required spacer instead or make a longer shaft.

Being 6'4" tall, I need to remove the wheel every time I try to enter my GTR and sit down, or it is a struggle to get my knees around the wheel and under the dash bar. I am very thankful for my quick-release wheel.

Yes, it is possible to forget to clip it in completely--BTDT in a Zink FF in pregrid once--but it is something you can add to your mental checklist before ever starting the car fairly easily, just like strapping into your harness, checking your mirror adjustment, etc. I have had removable wheels in many cars now, and it is second nature for me to give a tug on the wheel to check engagement before starting out. There are many aspects of car prep to pay attention to which might result in tragedy if ignored, like lugnut torque, tire pressure, wheel bearing condition, etc., so having a "preflight" checklist just as in aviation and practicing it religiously is a good idea.

If you are 6'4 I can see a need for the release. I am 6'2 and I have a release and if I do another GTR someday, I will not be fitting a release for the steering wheel, no need for entrance, risk of not refitting it properly, more cost, more weight. Lee

I think on mine you can't take the key out unless clicked into place!

Thats true but I leave the key in mine in case I need to get out in a hurry.
