canam hardtop who is interested ?

folks, i have more or less decided to engineer a nice hardtop for my canam that has certain advantages over the soft hood.
It will be a roof made of two pieces that would be hinged in the middle that could swing open like the gull doors of the famous mercedes.
This design would allow very easy access for the car and still provide a closed car ride.
A third part at the back with a rear window would permanentely stay on the car but removable if necessary or desired.
In an ideal case the two roof parts can be stored behind the seats, but that is not yet confirmed but a target.
I can now do it an a way that it would be an unique piece or engineer it in a way it will be a small series product using moulds and more professional outfit.
I think it could be done for 2000 pounds and the question is if there would be an interest at this price point for an ultima canam.
A full carbon fiber version would be possible as well or matching the car color or any color you want.
I do not want to start a company or business but a small series would allow some more professional bits making the whole thing nicer for me too.

This sounds like the same design as mine! I started mine some time ago but I don't seem to have much time to myself these days. I would be interested in one, and seeing your designs and ideas for the hardtop. My main concern was getting it to look right. My design had butresses much like the soft top. Without butresses it looks too cut off if you see what I mean.

Could be, nearly had miss-hap with soft roof last night when I nearly lost mine on M20. I put on in dark and had not clipped one correctly and it let go at 70mph. I did stop and put on correctly hopefully no damage.
The sedate journey around M25 gave me time to ponder how much nicer it would be if you could constarct a light weight frame to go around the side screens. The problem is at speed they tend to flex out due to air pressure and you get massive amount of wind noise.
How in your design do the doors engage with the roof.

interesting, factoy told me that the soft top is the only one in the industry that will let you go 200mph without any problems.
The fitting of this thing is another story and the general construction has room for improvement.
However while starting to fit the soft hood I had some discussions with the factory about the exact same problem and I have modified my side rails
In my case the rails were simply too high relative to the windscreen frame and thus the rubber seal of the hood pushed the side windows open.
The perspex and whole side screen window construction is too flexible so I think without overlapping this issue could remain even with my
hardtop design (as it is now)
My initial thought would exactly have adressed this problem, BUT if you overlap the roof panels over the doors and hold them in place while closing the roof lids
you have the problem that you cannot open the door prior to opening the roof. That also would mean that your door locks would have to go in the roof, unless you do not mind that anybody can open your roof lids. It was my first idea to push down the side windows with the roof lid. Maybe I should pursue that further and create a hidden mechanism to open the doors from the outside.
I am open to hear your comments on this.
Current ideas:
Anyway I have made my decision and the virtual engineering is in full swing. As mentioned before the 2 halfs will be hinged in the middle using stainless
steel nibbles that are retractable. The same method will be used when closing the lids with nibbles that will go in the windscreen frame and roll bar (or the back construction).
The mechanism allows for installing at your individual car with adjustment possibilities. I also want to include gas struts that push the lid
open once you have retracted the closing mechanism. The gas struts will also protect the lids swinging open too wide which is a natural problem in that kind of design.
There will be a third piece that is closing the car from the back (that is the tricky part) that will sit on a rubber seal on the rear bulkhead. Another rubber seal will be on the top and more seals that will close the door gaps.
The back bulkhead will have a window that will be hold with a rubber that allows installing of a perspex without screwing or glueing.
There is not much space for designing the roof and bulkhead as in my design the rear bonnet should swing open even if the hardtop is fully installed.
I will create moulds for these 3 pieces, so it will be quite a professional thing in the end, hence the higher price.
If that works out the way I intend too, you can see the hard top at stoneleigh next year.

I have always wished that the factory would sell a hybrid: Can Am with the option of fitting the GTR doors and engine cover and an alternate roof.
The F50 is a great place to start with design of a hard top (the rest of the car....).

Interesting design, yes should point out I hadn't engaged the sidebar properly, warning to all using softops. Never tested roof beyond about 80mph. Did wonder at Vmax if it would go faster than 176 with roof on but didn't want to test if it would stay on as would hake a hell of a mess of the car. Not so sure if the sidescreens might try and get away from the car at top speeds.

Ive been 150mph with the roof on, but cant see the side screens staying put at 200mph so I did all my high speed runs with the roof down.
I started making a hard top for my canam but ditched it as Id have to either have it up or leave it at home... my new car is having the hard top stowable so I have the option!
I do agree that you will need some sort of fabric butresses to make it look right when its on, thats why Martin fitted them to the soft top as it looked wrong without them.

Hi Newbie here, been a long tim lurker though.
Has any progress been made on this? Im now looking at Can ams but I live in scotland and a roofless car in scotland doesnt make sense. However I do love the open cockpit experience and the look of the can ams. A hard top option would Probably swing it for me.

Are you planning on a Targa style hardtop? I see there is a brace along the middle to the windsceen. If so I am thinking if the 2x roof panels unbolted you could somehow bolt them to the underside of the hood or to the rear window canopy somehow, that means you could still go roofless at a moments notice.
Ie made panels before using bike fairing half turn adjusters and also aerocatches which also come lockable and sit flush:
