Steering column
Discussion
I would leave it there unless you realy cant have it in your setup.
Looking at the IVA regs you may be able to claim that the protection is provided by the lower part of the shaft being at an angle.
The inspector must convince himself that the wheel will not move back towards the driver by more than 127mm in a 30mph frontal. The angle must be greater than 10 degrees. I will leave you to measure this as I don't fancy laying upside down in the footwell today. As the UJ on the upper shaft can only move back about 25mm before coming up against the chassis it is reasonable to claim that the lower shaft would then bend due to the angle.

EDA Just had another read of IVA section 14.
What I said above covers movement of the column in a crash.
What the section also says is that there must be protection from the driver impacting the wheel so the crush zone will have to stay.

i would think so.
you ABSOLUTELY needed it for SVA and my tester in April said the IVA was very hot on cockpit safety.
But there was something mentioned a while back that because the Ultima steering column was offset to the rack that technically the offset was a crush zone so you perhaps wouldnt need it.
Why dont you give the local test centre a call?

This may work if when the crush unit is removed the shaft can move into the dash when impacted by the driver. I suspect the reason for wanting to remove it is to make room for switchgear in which case it could be claimed that this arrangement would prevent the shaft moving forwards.Steve
Heck... a mine-field!
Actually I don't have a crush thingy which was the reason for the question.
One of these units would seriously screw up my column arrangements so I think best that I remove my steering wheel quick release (which is bigger than expected) and replace with a crush unit?
Steve, I have looked and looked but can't seem to find the IVA book as a download...and Ideas, as a google just brings back the finacial IVA thingy..
- which is...NOT NICE!
cheers

guys I must say that I installed a quick release on my GTR. Now that I have lived with the car for a bit I don't think that I would bother with one if and when I build a second GTR. The only time I take it off is when I am working under the dash and thats not very often. If some of you are trying to find ways to save a little time and money on the build this is one place I would suggest. Lee

Quite agree. If the function of the quick release, in this case, is for security then there is little point seeing as an Ultima has never been stolen.
