G50/03 Gearbox Clearance with Chassis
Discussion
Hi Chaps,
Put my engine and box in last night and the gearbox is very close to the top chassis rail. I will have to cut the box section to get a breather pipe in, but there is about 1mm clearance. Is this normal? I could machine a bit off the box to aid the issue, but I'm not sure if this is normal. Also drilling a fairly large hole in the box section must weaken it. Any thoughts or advice? Gearbox is a G50/03.
Many thanks.

The whole lot will settle when the mounts start to squish so don't worry about the clearance. You won't end up with much more than that under the sump.
I also had to drill through the cross member for my breather fitting. Drilled with enough clearance for a long series socket. Nothings broken after five years.

I drilled and tapped the side plate with the two hex' screw heads to fix my breather pipe . This way with the plate removed I didn't get swarf in the 'box . Also this plate/hole is a convenient place to put a hose in to refill the 'box with oil . Also I filed the top of the 'box to get a good clearance .

When I bought my G50/03 from the factory some 9 years ago, it came with this very modification already done. Frank

A typical over engineered solution would be to re-design and re-manufacture the cover plate with an additional island in the center...guess why my build has taken 3 and half years so far
