Is it true that LS7 engines only can only be used with a G50 gearbox ?
I am wondering if anybody has found a solution for a 6 speed gear box from a Porsche 996 model year 03/1999.
I have a 2 good offers for such a box with only 65k kilometer on it and would really like to use it with a LS7 engine.

Hi

The Getrag will run with a LS but you will need to have some machine work done to make it work(spin the starter round). I would not bother as its standard ratios are not suited to a big torquey LS7 and they are expensive to change. The G50 is a stronger box and more able to handle the torque you are going to throw at it with the LS. You can also play with your ratios on the G50 which will definately add to the driving experience. You can also run the G50 with cables if you want to, so you can have the advantages of the trag (not many) but utalise the 50.

I think a lot of people spend a lot of money on their engine but forget the trannie, which in most cases is just as important!!

I agree completely, pick your tranie as carefully as you are your engine as it is just as important and not worth skimping on.

The 996 turbo ratios are better than the std 996. Slight mod required to eliminate the awd.
We always put a taller 1st in the turbo box then the ratios are close to the Corvette with the exception of the Corvette's .5 6th gear.
The taller 1st makes for nice nearly equal rpm drop in each gear.
Also the Ultima supplied Getrag cable shifter works well with this trans.
We've installed and sold a number of these CMC modified 996 turbo units for Ultimas with excellent results.

Been looking for a 996 turbo box without any success, considering using a RT Quaife ZFQ about £6500 new, will bolt straight on to ls7. Going to have a measure up to see whats involved in making it fit the chassis

Can anyone recommend a good Builder of G50's?

I'm thinking of getting a Quaife LSD put in mine and may as well get stronger gearing while it's out...

ok cleaned my g50 trannie today (what a mess) and found it is a G50/03 with LSD. The question now is if I go for the longer 5 th gear before i actually put the gear box in the car (looking at 6 months minimum,so plenty of time).
Who is offering this longer gear and is it possible to install it myself ?
thanks

Spatz I have a g50-o3 in my GTR and I am very pleased. Mine is also equiped with a limited slip diff and that seems to work well. CMS in Calif did my trans and installed a .96 fourth and a .67 fifth works very well on the street with 565hp. CMS also installed the side shifter to allow the use of cables and I now run their new billet shifter, all and all are very nice combination. Lee

Hi Spatz - I did the swap myself --> http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The factory can supply the longer 5th gear set as well as some others such as http://www.carquip.com/parts/911/trans/gears/G50ge...

had some email forth and back with Ted today and they can supply the longer fith gear 31:41 ratio (0,76)
if I am assuming the right conversion.
the price was reasonable and will allow me the cruise in the 5 th gear at idling through the french
campagne and I have nothing else to do before my kit ships so my next challenge will be gear change !
I wonder if that will work out, considering my rudimentary knowledge of mechanics.

Hi Spatz, please don't take this the wrong way but if you only have a rudimentary knowledge of mechanics then I would seriously consider having an experienced professional undertake the work for you. The last thing you would want is spring loaded ball bearings flying across the workshop or even worse one of those ball bearings falling into the main gearbox housing!
