10 miles from home and suddenly no gear selection.

Only way to get home was to manually select 2nd and drive home at 25mph - not a great experience but at least the engine did not overheat.

The cable has snapped where it joins the slim metal tube that slides inside the outer housing.

Anyone ever change a gear cable?

I hope it just pulls through the bulkhead.

Where can I buy a new one?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Martin.

I have the Getrag gearbox with cable shift. When I first built the car the change was very smooth and easy to use - so much so that my brother converted his car from the G50 to the Getrag.
After 3 years I suddenly noticed that I struggled to get the car into gear occasionally and the change felt awkward - I am sure this was a progressive but I didn't notice until it was quite bad.
The gearchange got that bad that it broke one of the connectors on the gearlever.
I spoke to a cable supplier and was told that this was a common problem with the Porsche cables. I upgraded the cables to heavier teflon lined cables which they produced. The transformation was fantastic - effortless and fast gearchange. The downside was that the fittings were different which meant adapting both the gearbox and the gearlever and opening up the holes in the bulkhead - this is awkward with the engine in place.
