I have just returned from that hallowed place called the 'Nordschleife' or to put it into English, the North Loop in Nurburg, Germany. I went as a guest invited by Rickability and his pal Michael, ( as yet unregistered to this here little corner of our world ), and all I can say is WOW!, it is a truly awesome place to take any car but Rickability's GTR was electrifying and for the first time I have had a glimpse at what our cars can really do given the right circumstances. I have been out with LuckyP @ Bedford and that was a truly formidable experience but the Ring!, Jesus H Christ, it is over 14 miles long and has left and right hand bends, crests, banks, negative and positive cambers in fact I would go as far as to say that I don't think I have even come across some of the challenges anywhere before.
I went along with Michael in his 360 bhp Scooby and sat shotgun for more than 10 laps and I must say that the car along with over 10 years of Michael's NR experience was truly a glorious treat in itself, ( thumbup thanks very much mate ), but the couple of laps that I had in Rick's GTR were truly astounding. Rick is a not to shabby peddler for sure but the Ultima performed like it was built for the task. Be warned though, even in a seemingly care free environment, the noise Police were still on their guard and for future visiting Ultima's it may be well worth while trying to reduce the noise level a bit.
As soon as the GTW is fit, I will be making a pilgrimage to the Father land but be warned, it takes a fair few laps to learn this track and respect needs to be given in fair measure.
I am not belittling drag racing or speed events and it is good to do this type of thing rather than nothing but if you are in any way serious about your Ultima and are keen to see how it can really perform and what it has to offer, make that pilgrimage, you will not regret it.

Watch this space............

Three weeks to go, if I can only get the AFRs to settle properly. Anyone got a bullet cam they can lend, or an extra pair of silencers to stick on the back? Tell me more about the noise side, and what to watch out for, were they pulling any particular type of car such as high revving screamers over low range V8 rumble?

Hi,

Wayne, it's awesome isn't it? Breathtakingly good fun. Are you still thinking of going back in September... we are.

I don't think cameras are allowed believe it or not so make sure it's not visible. This is a pretty good site for information http://bridgetogantry.com/index.php

Hello Richard,
Yes, if at all possible I intend a repeat trip in September but it is more than likely that I will be taking my Z4MC as thw GTW will not be ready in time.
Tim,
I don't think you need to sweat it too much as the check that Rick experienced was a random swoop and it is not generally a problem but it can do no harm to be as prepared as possible. You are in for an Uber treat, let us know how you get on thumbup
No times were acquired but I can tell you for sure, the Ultima is fk off fast, and that is a fact. Every one talks about times but once you have completed a lap or three you realise that the times are not really what it is all about and how the manufacturers use them as pure propagander.

Yeah, it would be a really good idea to make sure the silencers are more than cosmetic.

Must say that it was great seeing (and of course hearing) that beautiful machine. Too bad the noise Polizei didn't have a sense of humour. Nice to see it sneaking out on Monday though.

Did you get the wiper sorted?

What a pity Wayne !!
I will be at the ring in August. I understand what you feel because it is the same I experienced the first time we drove there......I'm working hard on the car to be ready for the 2008 assault.;)

Yup, agree, times are irrelevant when you're there, getting around without smacking into anything is one of the biggest thrills. Getting around a bit faster without smacking anything next time is heavenly. Watching some of the experienced guys at work is spectacular, the first time we went we thought we were trying our best and going pretty quick, until we were passed by a bloke and his girlfriend in a bmw 3 series estate, he had his arm on the windowsill and was on the outside of a corner... He wasn't the last to pass us either but it didn't matter we had great fun and growing respect for the track.
