Flywheel lightening

Hi,

I've got my flywheel as part of the lexus/G50 adaptor kit from Kennedy's in the States and after chatting to a couple of guys I'm wondering about getting it lightened. It really does weigh a lot and I can't imagine we need the weight in such light cars, what are your views/recommendations on this, also, who might do it?

Any good precision engineering firm could do it but be sure they take mass from the outside whilst not weakening it. If you go to light the car may not drive nicely at cruising speeds so don't take off to much.

I would relate the weight of the flywheel to the tune of the engine rather than vehicle weight. If the engine is in any way 'cammy' then you will need the flywheel mass to keep it drivable in traffic and allow some sort of tickover.

If the flywheel is made by Kennedy have you asked them if they have already slimmed it down?

Hello Richard, glad to see that you are making some progress at last.
It may be worth bearing in mind that as you will be turbocharging your power plant, a weighty flywheel could well be an advantage

Wayne, yup, things are progressing.... mounts chopped out of chassis, wheels coming... I will get there! The first engine will be standard albeit supercharged, do you think it will still need to carry a bit of weight to keep the supercharger going? I suppose the supercharger adds drag so in theory it will require a bit of energy to keep the it spinning.

Steve, good point, I'll ask Kennedy's if they have made any mods, I did tell them what the application was when I bought it so they may have. The thing does weigh a lot though.

Hi Richard

I'm running a supercharger on my SBC and have just changed my flywheel and clutch package(see pic below). The standard Ultima one for the G96 Getrag weighs in at 16.5kg and my new one weighs in at 9.4kg. So 7.1kg saved and the car is just as driveable as before and is fine at cruising speeds. The engine does rev up quicker than before but on the road it's difficult to say the mass has made much difference. The reason being I have also raised the power over the winter. It was scary fast before and now it's just ballistic. I would speak to others who have supercharged that engine as the mass of the crank and the whole rotating assembly comes into play!
