Need some starter advice.

Wired up my new starter button last night and powered everything up, battery kicking out 13.8v, pumps whirring away, ignition on everything lite up, pushed the 'button' and all I got was . . . . 'click', pushed again and got 'click' again!!!!!!!!!!!!aaaagggghhhhh!!!!
Checked everything again, came up with the same result. . . . . .
Pleaseeeee don't tell that the starter has to come off. That'll mean shafts off, box out, clutch/flywheel off, adaptor plate off, just to get at the fg starter!!!
Any ideas out there?

Did you remember to connect the earthing strap? I didn't and wondered why my starter just made clicking noises.

Graham can you move the car forwards and backwards ? is it locked on the starter ? also check earthing but to be honest sounds like something to do with the wireing .

Yes, bolted from the adaptor plate to the bracket between the top suspension bushes, but I'll check the chassis end as it's been standing a while.

Are you hearing the starter click or the starter relay by the fuse box?

To eliminate all your starter circuit disconnect the wire to the solenoid on the starter and connect in its place a fairly heavy duty wire. connect the other end to the main red feed cable to see if that will engage and run the starter.

Unfortunately to do this I have to take the box, clutch/flywheel, adaptor plate off anyway as the wiring posts are by the block and inaccessible from above, it's a Getrag box BTW.

Are you a mechanic by trade Grant, starter motor failure=new engine
certainly sound like some ive come across

Graham - can you try jump starting the car from something else in case the battery is shagged, at least it will be something to tick of the maybe list.

Hit it with a soft mallet a few times its probably just stuck...... if that dont work put it in gear and bump the flywheel round half a turn you never know...

My starter started to play up, giving just a clicking sound and never engaging (for a while it would engage and drop out). Hitting it got it going most of the time but in the end you have that nagging in the back of your mind every time you go to start the car! I ended up replacing it, but on my G50 that is a ten minute job

Hi Graham,

If you have to take the box out etc, you can modify the mounting bolts and the cable connection so the starter can be removed without takeing anything off.

I have done this on mine and it works fine.

I want to thank all those who replied/helped me find the problem to my starter problem.
It was a wiring problem..........next time when I refit the starter (never I hope) I'll connect the fg thing to the battery... what a tw..t In my defence it was late last night and I was getting tired.
There'll be a few out there that won't be surprised, anyway it turns over now..................
