Oil temp sensor location?
Discussion
Have you now got a remote oil filter? I have, so I tapped an 1/8" NPT hole and fitted it to the top, thus making it inline and providing a good temperature reading.
I'm sure you could start a good debate, should the sensor be before or after any cooling? For me I want to know what is coming out of the engine, thus before the cooler.

I would want to know the oil temp exiting the engine as it would be the best guide as to what is happening.
If you want another gauge on the dash then use that to register the return oil so you know how well the oil cooling is working and perhaps also switch in an oil cooler fan if running a little hot. Remember also I posted a while back that high oil temp (synthetic) and low water temp was the ideal for best power.

Not sure if measuring both is important, but another was is to have two senders to one gauge via a switch. If you believe that the oil temp should be high compared to the water then having another sensor on the return will allow you to decide if you want to switch in the cooler fan.

I would say for track use the oil cooler is a good idea, but for normal road use less so. In fact, it provides too much cooling in normal use and you will probably find that the oil is not at a good operating temperature, as I did. I would suggest fitting an oil stat, mine bypasses the cooler when oil temp. is less than 80DegC. It will help the engine warm up and stop all the bad side-affects of cold oil.
Oh, I did also fit a fan, but rarely use it. As with coolant the fan only really helps when stationary, so good for helping oil cooling after a good blast!
