Where to source a Chevy Small Block?

Hi all,

I don't normally frequent these parts, but I thought you might be able to help me with something...

I am toying with the idea of a chevy V8 conversion on my Porsche 968. There's a company in the US called Renegade Hybrids that make a conversion kit for the 968 to a Chevy engine.

Where's the best place to source a Chevy V8? Given the $/£ exchange rate, is there a saving to be had by importing from the US directly? And do most of you chaps choose to go for new crate engines, or rebuilds? The crate engines look like good value for money, making me think there might not be much advantage going for a rebuild. Unless I could source a rebuilt engine from the US? Also, I am favoring the LS2 all aluminium engine (don't want to add too much weight and want to keep weight distribution the same), and looking for c. 400bhp - would the LS2 seem like the sensible choice?

Sorry for so many newbie questions - but your thoughts would be appreciated.

You can buy an LS2 crate motor direct from GM in the UK - costs around £4.5k.

Yep, so I can source a brand new LS2 engine in the UK for sub £4000 which will give me 400bhp and lb/ft torque. My question is, are there any american v8 breakers in the UK that would be a source of engines, and if so, who? And does it work out cheaper, or would I end up paying £2500 for a LS1 engine, another £1k on tuning to reach 400bhp, and another £1k f-ing about, wishing I'd just bought a new one?

Or, do I go to someone like this in the US and ship a used engine across to the UK? http://stores.ebay.com/Fparts
