Four Wheel Drive?
Discussion
Sorry..... I didnt mean chain-drive all the way to the front, it was chain drive to connect the output shaft to the shaft running forward. Needn't be a chain connection, could be a transfer case with gears.
Main thoughts were> (starting from the front)
Front diff where the battery is (brakes may also be able to be moved inboard?)
Shaft running between the seats.
Shaft down side of engine.
Chain (or transfer case) to connect to the output shaft on the C4 transaxle. (which would be facing rearwards)
Maybe I had too much red wine last night?

... I wonder.....
Why?
I think the handling is neutral enough on the limit, ooodles of oversteer when prompted and then just a tad of understeer as you kiss the exit kerb. What would 4wd do?
You've done the C4/C2 thing right?

I need to nip down to HK and show you the light (I am in Shanghai at the moment), you'd be adding quite a bit of weight and cost for almost no gain and I can't see why you'd need it.
Get the car set up by an expert (I learned this after I sold the car) as this will make a much bigger difference.
If you really want to make the car handle a lot better, redesign the chassis with longer wishbones and inboard suspension.... wont be cheap tho unless you sell up and start from scratch.

Ahh... Shanghai. Fun place. The nightlife is spectacular.Get the car set up by an expert (I learned this after I sold the car) as this will make a much bigger difference.

The 4wd thing was just a thought... not doing it to the GTR, but contemplating my next build. Not sure exactly what it will be but a few things are stuck in my head... Scratch Built, Audi V8, 4wd, alloy body.
Im trying to gauge interest here to start a "car builder's / restorer's club". The idea is to rent a factory unit and fit it out with all the cool tools. Big stuff like hoists, compressors, welding stuff, english wheel, brake press etc will be communal, each member has a lockup for handtools. We'll get specialists is to do seminars on various trades. Space here in HK is at a premium and I am one of the lucky (very) few to have a garage at hom e that I can build a car in, most people only have a parking space and are not allowed to work on cars there. This, combined with the fact that most of the people into cars here are loaded and wont mind the expense may just work out. I dont have the room for a scratch built at home, but if I can get this idea off the ground that's what I'm gonna do.
it could work on paper.
you would need to use the Turbo 4WD box and then mate a transfer case onto the back (some guys wled them on!). then you are still going to have a hell of a lot of prop shaft to run the te front of the car!
an alternative might be swing the wqhole thing around, dump the Porsche box and run a T56 with a transfercase. if you could get it to run down the pass side it would intrue less. then you could run the prop back to the rear diff and the front on to the front diff. also with this idea you might want to move the engine back a bit, give you a little more room then.
just my opinions though.
CHris.

???? - I hope you were not talking about this for an Ultima, in order to put a diff behind the engine you'd need to push the engine forward, then you'd be sitting on the gearbox....ezakimak said:

What's the picture of? - no good for the Ultima but might be for the next project.crafty said:
... ahh... Nissan GTR
yep, tempting - i can see the cogs spining in your head right now
If they got the old 2.6 litre gtr’s running into the 8s down the ¼ with street legal radials, imagine what they will get the new 3.5litre engine to do.

Given the number of people that will inevitably end up modifying these, it will only be a mater of time before there are sequential mechanisms for the box, and dog gears as well.
I would expect that the gearbox from a Nissan GTR to come in at around the same price as the equivalent aged Porsche boxes being used if not less. In Australia GTR stuff would be a lot cheaper than Porsche stuff and more readily available. A complete un-complianced 89 gtr would be around $9K AUS, you might even be able to pick one up when you come down in march for the F1GP.
Someone in Japan did do a mid engine version of the gtr, using the layout suggested a couple of years back. Maybe Google is your friend.
