Oil cooling issues

My GTR has a factory supplied oil cooler located in the side pod with no fan assist. Has anyone experienced excessive oil temperatures when on a track day in a 500bhp? GTR as while my engine is out, the oil cooling could be reviewed.

What is excessive oil temp 120degC or more? A long time ago I fitted a fan to my cooler (the standard 25 row rad) TuxMan did the same. It has worked to reduce oil temps but I very very rarely have to turn it on, once at Snetterton when I was hitting 115+.

But there is a downside; if your intake air comes from the engine bay the fan will do a very good job at preheating your air intake charge. This will reduce performance and push temperatures up further helping things to spiral out of control. You could consisder pulling engine bay air through the oil cooler and out of the side pod so that the air intake if not affected though.

I also have a Sport with 400bhp and on the odd occasion I have been on a track day the oil temp after about 8 laps gets to 120 C.

This is with a Pacet fan to help the cooling.

I am hoping not to repeat this problem with the GTR - if there is a problem.

to be honest most of us had to fit oil thermostats as at motorway speed the cooler can over cool the oil so it does work well as it is ,the fan is a good idea as it also pulls cold air into the rear clip and helps keep it cooler under the clip ,i know it works because if i sit in traffic wait until temps in the bay get up if i switch the fan on i see a drop in bay temps and my oil pressure comes up a bit .

That is a bit different to what I saw in my GTR when I hooked up 8 thermocouple probes around the engine bay. Yes air does get blown around but the intake air is pushed up, not to oil temp but somewhere between ambient and oil temperatures. I would not expect the engine bay to be bathed in cool ambient air if the oil is indeed very hot!

very true but i think the main help is just air movement under the clip , does not effect inlet temps as i have a cold air pickup

If you also have water temp issues then you will fit the Pacet fans.
This will leave you a fan (or two) spare to fit to the cooler.
Ask me how I know.
